I can't say that games now are particularly any harder or easier then older games, just some games themselves have always been hard. Now, if it was a question of Japanese versions being harder then American versions, then there's no question. It's just a fact. Mario 2 for example, the Japanese version is completely different from the American version. The Japanese version looks much like the original, except with massive holes between you and the victory flag (just to name something). They thought the game was too hard, so they gutted another game (I think it was called Doki Doki Panic, something like that), and changed the graphics to suit Mario. Now, I haven't played the
real Mario 2, but the one I did play was ridiculously easy if you played as a certain person. There's also an "easy type" and "hard type" of Final Fantasy IV (or II if you played it on SNES). The Japanese version is the "hard type" and has stronger enemies. I don't know about the Japanese Mario 2, but I know "hard type" Final Fantasy IV has been released in America since then. Just a couple examples; I've heard of others, but can't think of what they are right now.
Other games were hard no matter what. Pretty much the entire Megaman series beats the crap out of you for hours, maybe days, until you figure out exactly what you have to do to beat a certain boss. Although, some of the more modern Megaman games have been a lot easier (trust me, I've played them all before GBA), but then once they got to Megaman Zero, they were hard as nails again. Certain ones seem to be easier, like Megaman 8, but the whole series in general is pretty tough overall.
Reading your first post (and skipping to the end), I just think all FPS' are pretty easy in general too. I played through Gears of War 2, my first time ever playing a Gears game, and died maybe... six times throughout the entire play through on the normal difficulty. It's not really all that difficult.
For the really
hard games, you'll be looking at the old arcade games. Games like Contra, Mario, any scrolling shooter, Metal Slug, pretty much anything with the one-hit-your-dead gameplay. They're designed to be harder so you'll give them more money to get more credits to die again. Even then, all those games get really easy once you know what to do in them.
Wow x.x ended up longer then I planned. Summary: certain series may be hard, but they've always been hard, but games overall don't seem to be getting any easier.
