Whats your favorite musical genera?? Or some of your favorites if you cant pick one signle genera smile
Genre.

My favorite genre usually depends on my mood. I'm a big fan of Baroque music, Classical and Romantic era Operas, Alternative Rock, Jazz Fusion, music of the French Impressionists, Symphonic Metal... but I basically like everything except dubstep - dunno why, I just can't get into it.

Currently, I'm loving this Vocaloid stuff - very cool.

Anyway, I'm fond of various types of Classic Rock (Progressive/Jazz and Soft, mainly) and Classical (Mostly Renaissance and Impressionist at this moment, but I still love Classical and Baroque)

Lol - the Vocaloid stuff does take a second to adjust to - it's kind of like drinking alcohol. "*sip* oh, ew, this stuff tastes so bad, it *sip* well.. I guess it isn't that *sip* omg this stuff is greeeeeeat!'

I love me some Rameau and Debussy (even though Debussy was a huuuuuuge d**k...) but I prefer Faure to all of them.
J.S. Bach is my homeboy - I never get tired of listening to his music. (Possibly because there's so much of it >.> wink

El. Oh. El.
Haven't met many Music Majors, huh?
I don't like ALL of it - Mozart's piano music makes me want to kick babies, and there's only a couple Beethoven symphonies that I like (his later ones.)

Some of my favorite pieces are J.S. Bach's Chaconne in d minor from the second violin partita, 'Erbarme Dich' from the St. Matthew Passion, and Rachmaninoff's All Night Vigil ( especially the second movement - I would KILL for that mezzo solo...)

I don't meet a lost of music majors. sad I only really met someone back in 2011 who made music. It wasn't classical, but he knew what he was doing, so I felt closer to him than anybody else who claimed to write music.

Since you compared it to drinking, can I assume that appreciating Vocaloids is also in the same way a taste that both is not worth acquiring and can only bring about harm?

No - that is quite lovely. I'll rephrase - most of his SOLO piano works, like the sonatas, make me want to kick babies. His orchestral works and vocal works are quite lovely. His Requiem is sublime, I could listen to it all day.

Maybe it's just agita from having to learn them gonk . I had to learn just as many Chopin pieces though, and I love his solo piano works...

As for 'not worth acquiring,' if that's how you feel - I won't argue. smile
Wait until you're in/out of college before you decide that though :-p When I was in high school I had the same opinion - 'omg, alcohol is evil, no good can come of it, it's the worst invention in the world I hate it and I hate everyone who consumes it.' [long story sweatdrop ] Then I learned it wasn't as evil as the DARE programs made it out to be. :-p Just wait - something about having a nice glass of wine with a home cooked dinner, or grabbing a beer after a hard day at work... it's just nice. It's not always about drinking until you can't remember anything. xp

One might also argue that any acquired taste is a taste not worth acquiring - Escargot, Frog's legs, haggis, liver, a variety of foreign cheese... it also applies to music! Considering the musical exposure of most of the general population, 'Classical' music itself is an acquired taste. Listening to music in pure tuning instead of even/well-temperment is another acquired taste. Each specific genre has things about it that are unique, and each has people who think it's the best thing in the world, and some who think they're listening to garbage. A person who has been exposed to nothing but Classical and Baroque music for their whole life will hear the Rite of Spring, or a work by John Cage or Phillip Glass, and thing 'WTF AM I LISTENING TO?! RAGE! scream ' (Which, coincidentally, is exactly what happened at the premiere of the Rite of Spring.)

Long story short - your 'not worth acquiring' argument could theoretically be applied to any genre of music - but then we have that argument applied to classical music, contemporary music, romantic music, opera... (and opera is CERTAINLY an acquired taste.)

Just something to think about.

I am 23 years old.

Drinking responsibly is not something I will really judge somebody else over. I just think it is pointless. It tastes bad and it really isn't good for you. Especially if you don't drink responsibly. I have no idea at how much I would get drunk. I couldn't even get past a few sips of the stuff. It's gross, and I have enough health issues. I don't think it's worth it.

Drinking is a whole different matter. Unlike acquiring different music tastes, drinking can have very negative effects on you.

Classical music wasn't really ever an acquired taste for me, and I didn't really grow up listening to it. I first really got into it in my junior year of high school.
