I'm a psychology major, this is what I do.
Yes, I would be upset, and I would let them know how I felt but in the end I would let them know that if that choice made them truly happy then I would be glad for them.

you'd be glad they showed you that you weren't worth their time to inform personally and on top of that gave selective advantages to those who live in the same country/have a phone, thus saying "******** you" to anyone without those two things? i doubt it, xumot

People have to realize that humans aren't inherently good.
Our morals don't share common ground in many cases.
All this labeling of who is bad, good, selfish, or selflessness is just a coping mechanism.
Thing to do is move on and hope for better.

Humans are born with varying emotions.
They're all aren't guided by good intentions or bad intentions.
There is a balance that displaces the two oppositions.
However the balance can be upset with an influx of influences from one side.

Curt, if someone wants to hurt you, they will find a way.
Blaming myself for their insecurities isn't any more productive than what the did to me.
As I said, I would allow them to leave, but I would let them know how I felt.
I would be upset, I would also probably think "Wow, I wasn't worth their time. I obviously meant nothing to them.".
I have thought these things before in previous relationships, and I got over it.
In the end, they may have abandoned you in the shittiest way possible, but that still doesn't deter the fact that you can move on and expect more of the same mannerisms.

It may not be "polite" or even "respectful", but that's how life is.
It's how you carry yourself to move forward that counts, not how you carry the guilt and hate.

EDIT: Rule of Thumb, kids: If you ever get married to someone over the internet, and even remotely keep that serious, be serious about it, and love and respect your partner. They're the only ones who matter at the end of the day.
