Welcome to Gaia! ::

The color is pretty good, her proportion is off a bit, but otherwise she does have potential. If she so desires, she can improve. An artist is never finished improving, and they will only once create a piece in their lifetime that they can say was their absolute best.

Okay, I can see where you're coming from and I don't want to start an arguement. Could you please clarify how her 'her art isn't good in the least yet' though, please? I just want to know.

She doesn't yet have an understanding of anatomy, proportion, her values aren't there, she hasn't quite gotten a handle on actual color (so her colors are very fanciful, but they aren't exactly what is needed to build a foundation in color theory) She's a beginning artist, she is weak in all areas.

"Weak in all areas'? Do you have nothing nice to say about her art at all? It's one thing to give constructive criticism, another to write off someones art completely. And not even to her 'face'. I suggest you contact her directly and tell her how she can improve, instead of writing it on a forum post she'll probably never even read. Maybe then I'll take you seriously.

Well I guess she's good in a way that she has her own style. One look of her arts and you'll know that it's from loz-girl. Especially the color and the faint sketches, they're marvelous.
But the drawings of people itself... kind of lame. And for a 13 yr. old, she could do better than that. The drawings look like they've been sketched by a seven yr.old and yet their colors are like that of a teenager. Pretty balanced, I say.
Lots and lots more practices on her drawings, and she'll be good to go smile

A seven year old? Seriously? Do you mean how she sketches her lines, or how she generally draws people?

FINALLY, someone who has given a balanced critique of my friends art. I applaud you. smile

If you're gonna be butthurt over simple comments, don't post.

She is a very talented artist for a 13-14 year old girl, and I believe she has great potential as an illustrator, she has improved greatly over the last year. biggrin

Take a look at her page and please tell me what you think!

You said you wanted opinions and you got butthurt over people saying "bad" things about it.

What? You want asspats? No, you didn't ask for constructive critique, you asked for opinions.

And as a matter of fact, yes. She's weak in all areas, anatomy, value, color, perspective, or anything. And I don't think she's talented, she just spend more time adding texture to her art- the sketch/drawing itself isn't anything special, just like your usual kid's sketch.

Are you one of Loz-Girls/Alices friends on deviant art? I'm afraid I don't know you xD I'm one of Alices friends from school.
I see no need to get defensive over something that isn't yours, yet you asked for. When you fish for compliments don't be mad when a shark takes your bait.

She has potential, like any human has potential. But she also seems to have a circle of friends (IE YOU) that think she shits diamonds. Being her friend doesn't mean you have to like her unconditionally or defend her like a rabid dog. Being an artist is being able to take a critique and using it.

She uses more colors and has more tools at her disposal that most 13 year olds but fancying up a cubic zirconium with a nice cut, still makes it a fake diamond. She does a lot of portraits that implies, like most young artists, that she has no idea how to draw the rest of the body. When she does draw the body she hides the hands and feet or just draws little bubbly stubs.

As far as I can see her use of color is the only thing that separates her from other people her age. But there it just looks like she takes cues from Loish.

Okay, I admit, I got defensive. But she's my best friend, in real life. I've known her since I was 3 years old.

Personally, yes, I can tell she admires Loish's art. I know for sure that that she is one of her favourite artists, and she won't deny that.

The mighty power of color picker!!!! FEAR PHOTOSHOP!!

Ok, gotta throw in something. Let's be realistic, she's a normal 13 years old. No, she's not a prodigy or a very talented genius.

One thing though, she's got quite an eye for design. She slaps on texture and symbolism without making it look uber shitty. It's quite something, you know.

There are a lot of adults- very delusional ones- who use photoshop tricks to make their art look better, but they're actually making it look worse. Some people use dodge and burn tool, and some people paint shadows with BLACK.

She didn't, and let's say it's actually a good point. She didn't make ridiculous mistake that even adults make, and considering she's 14, she's got a head start.

I feel so bad for having a go at you earlier, after reading this comment. I apologize.

Yeah, I guess I over-exaggerated a bit... my bad.
So she may not be a 'child prodigy' but really do those even happen anymore?

The fact that she's even learned to take color queues from something is a good one. Maybe she hasn't fallen into her own color scheme or maybe that IS her natural color scheme, but she's paying attention to color, and when I was applying for MCAD the fact that I had color (HORRIBLE COLOR, mind you) pieces in my portfolio at all made them sit up and take notice.

If she's your best friend, buy her some Staedtler pens (Microns have the tendancy to break and bleed ink in the caps) or ZIGs and tell her to work on her inking, in a nice way.

I think I turned out pretty good (definitely not the best but hey I could be a lot worse kind of an area) and I wasn't as good as she was at 13. But I -also- spent my highschool years learning how to draw important parts of the human body, realizing 'Damn, I suck at feet/hands/men/women/clothes.' and then taking lots of time to practice them. Your friend might want useless compliments but if she does also really want to get anywhere useless compliments will only stall her progress and make her not improve, since she'll think she's already reached the finish line.

I'm just giving you my opinion of her art. You asked for it, so I gave it. She is a beginning artist.
She has a lot to learn. She isn't what I would call a good artist at all because of this. That's what I think. Defending her after asking for someones personal opinion is stupid? What did you expect?
