*sighs irritably* I only read about half of the first book, and while I didn't think it was eye-stabbingly bad, I was absolutely amazed to find that it has the fan following that it does. And when I went back and thought about it, I realized that most of that half focused on two things: emphasizing how "awesome" the vampires were (and I use the word very loosely), and how helpless the main character was by comparison (and apparently this was supposed to deepen her character).
I once heard that the book was referred to as "vampire fiction for people who don't like vampires." Seriously, what? What's the point? That's like saying "it's a 500-page novel for people who don't like reading." I think I'd have been a lot less annoyed if S. Meyer had just made up her own humanoid race and tried to do something with that. However, and I'll probably get flamed for this, I admit that I find her explanation of why vampires don't go out in sunlight to be highly inventive. No, I don't like the explanation, but I do think it's unique. My response, though: "you know that you don't HAVE to let your vampires be sun-shy, right? Dracula wasn't." Holy crap, I wrote a lot more than I thought I would. |
