Sex appeal comes from physical appearance, demeanor, and mind. Just because you're horny all the time doesn't make you sexy.

Far be it that vampires possess a supernatural seductiveness. Sure, they have lust and go after virgins, but come on, they weren't appealing. Vampires were ruddy and bloated, due to feeding on human blood.

Every author has a different view on vampires. I personally like Laurell K Hamiltons take on vampires the best.

But not every view is accurate. It rapes the whole vampire folklore, which is disappointing.

What is so scary about sparkly vampires, anyway?

It's an inaccurate portrait of the vampires of folklore.

Nothing. There is no reason behind the sparkling; I am a bit of a scifi nerd, but living (and ex-living too) have reasons why they appear the way they do. Traditional vampires don't have pigmintation in their skin, so they burn in the sun. The same concept is present in I Am Legend.

Traditionally, vampires were not vulnerable to sunlight. The only vampire that I am aware of that fears sunlight are the vampires of China, the Chiang-Shih. The idea of vampires being vulnerable to sunlight came from the movie, Nosferatu, which was directed by F. W. Murnau.

name a good vampire book then

Dracula by Bram Stoker? I've never read it, but it's a classic, and the idea of Dracula originates from that book.

Most of that was true, however, traditionally, all the undead were things of the night. This was because in the medieval mind, sunlight represented purity, the presence of god, so therefor the aversion to sunlight was prevalent in most of the monsters and undead in folklore, hence why King Hamlet's ghost disappeared at dawn in Shakespeare's Hamlet. In Romania, when someone died inexplicably during the night ((not surprising, considering the average life expectancy was 35 if you were lucky)), they would often dig up the corpses of the recent dead, and if they had blood welling at the mouth ((which often happens as part of the decomposition process)) it was obviously feeding on the living during the night. They would then deal with it in many ways, staking it into the ground so it couldn't get up ((not at all derived from Vlad teppish, though Stoker used it as such)) or severing the head and burning it. Hence the popular notion that vampires fear sunlight.

Also, why is it that apparently the dominant two feelings in vampires are thirst for blood and lust?

Because otherwise they wouldn't be sexy.

I'm a bit of a scholar, I come from a long line of historians, a history of history if you will. So as a scholar I might be able to take this one. Vampires as were embodiments of sin, of the damned, in a society becoming more open with its own sexuality after the victorian times, were it was considered highly inappropriate to even mention sex, Dracua was a rather sexually explicit work for its time. As such, the vampires have strong sexual undertones, biting on the neck, hints of incest and polygamy ((in drcula's "brides)) and unnatural attractiveness. The vampires used their beauty, charm, and sexual appeal as a tool to lure their victims into submission. Much like a spider will lure an insect to its web, attraction to a vampire was akin to the attraction man hides to sin, the attracttion was unnatural, as all the vampires were in fact undead, so the kiss of a vampire was the kiss of a corpse.
people tend to relate to the characters and it's also the appeal of the forbidden fruit and u wanting a taste.

Well Lucid, you see, Americans are stupid. American teenagers are even more retarded (Me included, I don't deny it. But at least I'm better than twilight fans). The only reason twilight is popular is because the stupid american females and stupid american males think its good writing because they've never read a good vampire novel. Another hypothesis I have is that, since Americans are stupid, they need to read something so they seem less stupid. However, due to their sheer ignorance, they pick up the first novel with a slightly big ord for a title. And they then think, "Hey! This book is dumber than me!" an decide to read it to make themselves seem smarter by comparing themselves with it.

Hmm ok let's see...Vampire books that are far more appealing than twilight...
Any Anne Rice book

Salem's Lot

Dracula

There's plenty out there. I havn't read many books period (except for Stephen king. Have read like 12 so far). But I know for a fact that there are so many vampire novels that vastly surpass that piece or literary gabage
