No one can convince you that Twilight is a good series if you've read it and don't like it. I love it. It's something about the "forbidden romance", and the love triangle. Plus there's action, and adventure.
For me, it was just a book that I couldn't put down. I loved it.

I love vampires, and always have, and I've always loved the whole forbidden romance between a vampire and a human. Ever since the whole, Spike and Buffy thing. I'm a sucker for it. I'm a sucker for any kind of fantasy.

That's just the way I am, it's what I like.

So you would say it is worthwhile reading? How did you like the movie?

When I discussed this with my much older Sister-in-Law she said she could not understand why anyone would be attracted to a vampire and that the film was very creepy in her opinion.

My Sister-in-law had only viewed the film because one of her young nieces is an avid fan and begged her to see it.

The movie was crap. Honestly. I mean, I guess I would have liked it if I hadn't read the books, but the movie left out so much.
I seriously missed a lot while I was asleep...

I read through all the replies, and it seems that the main thing people like about the books is the romance. The comment about Edward saying what all girls want their boyfriend to say is true. The issue I have with that is we all have similar desires, and making one character everything we want is truthfully a little boring to me. I think authors write to get a reaction from their readers. If you want people to feel sad, you use certain phrases and images to make people sad. When I first read the books and I liked them, I couldn't put them down because of my own internal swooning for Edward. After I read Eclipse a few hundred times (it was the only one I owned for a few months; I had stolen the others from friends), I started picking up on the odd descriptions. In some places, there was enough to make me immediately imagine something particular, and in other places it varied every time I read it. As for people hating it because it's popular, I think they're more concerned with the annoying hype (and the loud squeals from some girls every time Edward is mentioned).

I can still enjoy the series, but I tend to shake my head more often than when I first read it. Breaking Dawn is still a major disappointment. I can't think of anything in that book that wasn't unpredictable. In the first three, a lot of things were predictable, but a few pieces weren't. I think in Eclipse, as soon as Bella noticed her clothes were missing I figured someone had stolen her scent.
Well Lucid, you see, Americans are stupid. American teenagers are even more retarded (Me included, I don't deny it. But at least I'm better than twilight fans). The only reason twilight is popular is because the stupid american females and stupid american males think its good writing because they've never read a good vampire novel. Another hypothesis I have is that, since Americans are stupid, they need to read something so they seem less stupid. However, due to their sheer ignorance, they pick up the first novel with a slightly big ord for a title. And they then think, "Hey! This book is dumber than me!" an decide to read it to make themselves seem smarter by comparing themselves with it.

it's TEEN ROMANCE you expect too much.

Funfact: teens were apparently not originally Stephenie Meyer's target group.

...Now if only I could find the interview I read where she said that. xD
Keep in mind that this is her first novel series.
I thought the first book was alright,
not the best but in no means "trash".
The second one was slightly worse, but it was okay.
I personally believe that the last two books of the series were forced to be written.
She was pulling in a lot of money with the first 2 books
so the publisher probably wanted her to write more.
The 3rd book hardly followed the plot and was mostly filler
the last one was rushed and sloppy.

That's my honest opinion about the quality of the books,
but overall the series got more teens into reading
and I'm thrilled about that
smile
i liked the book, i thought it was cute, and i didn't see any reason not to like it...

My point of view is that the Twilight series is literary trash. Before anyone tries to hunt me down and kill me (good luck, by the way), I'd like to know why people disagree. I've read all the published books several times. I used to like the series, but then it disgusted me. Keep in mind that I'm only talking about the books! Now, I'm also a writer of many forms (high school journalist, poet with published works, and full length fiction novels that are unpublished but being edited by myself) and I've researched elements present in many books, styles of writing, and above all else cliches. I own a book called How Not to Write a Novel, and with everything I've learned, I can't see why Twilight is a good series. Please try to convince me.

why did you read it so many times??? burning_eyes

Dracula, Interview with a Vampire, The Queen of the Damned.

Some good movie series woudl include (not based on gore content or popularity): Underworld and Underworld Rise of the Lycans, the Blade series, the Dracula series.

A good but MATURE podcast would be Fifteen Forever.

Sex appeal comes from physical appearance, demeanor, and mind. Just because you're horny all the time doesn't make you sexy.

Far be it that vampires possess a supernatural seductiveness. Sure, they have lust and go after virgins, but come on, they weren't appealing. Vampires were ruddy and bloated, due to feeding on human blood.

Every author has a different view on vampires. I personally like Laurell K Hamiltons take on vampires the best.

But not every view is accurate. It rapes the whole vampire folklore, which is disappointing.

Obsidian Deathwish
What is so scary about sparkly vampires, anyway?

It's an inaccurate portrait of the vampires of folklore.

LucidRain
Nothing. There is no reason behind the sparkling; I am a bit of a scifi nerd, but living (and ex-living too) have reasons why they appear the way they do. Traditional vampires don't have pigmintation in their skin, so they burn in the sun. The same concept is present in I Am Legend.

Traditionally, vampires were not vulnerable to sunlight. The only vampire that I am aware of that fears sunlight are the vampires of China, the Chiang-Shih. The idea of vampires being vulnerable to sunlight came from the movie, Nosferatu, which was directed by F. W. Murnau.

Dracula by Bram Stoker? I've never read it, but it's a classic, and the idea of Dracula originates from that book.
I don't know if this has been mentioned already. Anyway, since we're on the topic of novel types and why Twilight isn't well written, I'd just thought I'd throw in a tidbit on what Stephen King said about the Twilight series. He compares Stephenie Meyer and J.K. Rowling's way of writing, and says that “Both Rowling and Meyer, they’re speaking directly to young people… The real difference is that Jo Rowling is a terrific writer and Stephenie Meyer can’t write worth a darn. She’s not very good.”

It's a Mary Sue, all young girls love that kind of sappy, perfect love story. When it explodes into media, the horrible fan girls have access to all the shirts and posters and it all goes downhill from there.

I think she had the plot and basics for a great love story, but she put it together horribly. All of those books had so much more potential.
