That right there is your problem. People (guys especially) are less likely to approach a stranger (esp. someone of the opposite sex) if they're accompanied by a friend or a group of friends. You need to learn how to talk to people on your own, without having a friend there.

I have the unfortunate situation of living in the Minneapolis area. The people here are all shut in and scarcely do they wander out of their own little social group.
