Hippies? What a quaint thing to hate.
Are there really any left? I mean, seriously?
At this point it's like hating Scythians or Picts.
There are plenty out there, and even more who claim to be them.

And I despise the normal and so-called "Hard-working" people of the United States who fund our wars and consistently put new marionettes into office every four years. I personally don't think it's right to blame a counter-culture movement for the corruption of society when they were just simply trying to change that corruption. Not too many people care enough to try and polish our cracked and crumbling society.
"Counterculture"? Really? Isn't that just a pretty packaging for "quits job to protest but doesn't really know what they're protesting"? I seem to recall there being little in the way of structure at the Wall Street protests - most of the people being interviewed had quit their jobs, but didn't even know what they were protesting - they just wanted to be a part of it. I've met too many of these people who blindly join these so called crusades (like the Invisible Children assholes this week) who don't do any kind of research - they put on the t-shirt and join the party to feel important.
What's wrong with being a hardworking member of society? What would you rather do with your time? Play X-Box and smoke weed? Wake up! Your rulers will always be corrupt! These people are self-hating first worlders, who think that the world is better in the slums of India because at least there are Buddhists there and they know what's up. If they hate America so much, why don't they leave? Oh wait, no one else wants them in their country, either, and they know that America is they only place that will tolerate their whiny asses.
Thank you.
And some people want more out of their short lives than simply living the American Dream and being just another cogwheel in the machine of society. You're right about people "just wanting to be apart of" the Occupy Wallstreet protests, but they were just a minority. The media wasn't going to interview people who actually had vision and specific goals because then it might have actually caused more people to think about the state of the United States and try to change it.
There's nothing wrong with being a hardworking member of society if that's what you want to do, but they shouldn't hate people with alternative ways of thinking. Of course, I'd rather try and create change in society than just inhabit it. I think you'll find that there are many people who believe in the exact same thing and do not sit around and smoke weed or play x-box.
If our rulers will always be corrupt, then why should we tolerate it. Society will stagnate unless there is constant progression and having people in power who do not genuinely care for humanity is not going to give anyone a decent future.
They don't hate America. If they did, wouldn't it make more sense for them to encourage its destruction by supporting the wars we are involved in and promoting ignorance? Usually people who "whine" and want change are doing so because they like their country and don't want to see it fall to its grave.
I think you're giving "the media" too much credit. I think that there may have been some semblance of a plan, because statistics would say that SOMEONE out there had their s**t together. But the faceless masses didn't know what they were doing, and they were the ones seeking the cameras.
We tolerate the rule, or we become the rulers. If you are ruled, you will always find reasons to hate it, my friend. I think it's an uphill battle to hate those in charge of you. Use the system. Become the power - don't hate it. You can never exert change on the groups of people you piss off. Do you think the "1%" is going to change their minds and give you their money? ******** no. But what if you become one of them? Suddenly you have the power to change things. The 99% can't change anything. You must become them to change them.
What you are saying makes sense, however, it's pretty difficult for most people to use the system to their advantage and gain a new standing in society's hierarchy. And, for those who somehow do become part of the 1%, they may have the power to change things but it it is highly unlikely that they will want to change anything because wealth and power become like an addiction after a certain period. It's a continuation of the cycle and nothing more, in my opinion.
But, honestly, I don't show as much support to "hippies" and other subcultures because they demand changes in the economic structure of society as I do for their demands for less government control. They were a necessary group in the '60s because they promoted free expression and free speech in the midst of a uniform and materialistic era, which is why I have at least some respect for them. A similar movement would prove to be very beneficial if it were to occur in the United States at this time when it seems like we've lost a large amount of our rights for the illusion of security.
