Then get more than one job.

Not that simple. Most jobs won't allow it or hire you if you have a restricted schedule. They want open availability.

And even getting one part time job is difficult if you're not a high school student.

Hippies? What a quaint thing to hate.

Are there really any left? I mean, seriously?

At this point it's like hating Scythians or Picts.

And I despise the normal and so-called "Hard-working" people of the United States who fund our wars and consistently put new marionettes into office every four years. I personally don't think it's right to blame a counter-culture movement for the corruption of society when they were just simply trying to change that corruption. Not too many people care enough to try and polish our cracked and crumbling society.

"Counterculture"? Really? Isn't that just a pretty packaging for "quits job to protest but doesn't really know what they're protesting"? I seem to recall there being little in the way of structure at the Wall Street protests - most of the people being interviewed had quit their jobs, but didn't even know what they were protesting - they just wanted to be a part of it. I've met too many of these people who blindly join these so called crusades (like the Invisible Children assholes this week) who don't do any kind of research - they put on the t-shirt and join the party to feel important.

What's wrong with being a hardworking member of society? What would you rather do with your time? Play X-Box and smoke weed? Wake up! Your rulers will always be corrupt! These people are self-hating first worlders, who think that the world is better in the slums of India because at least there are Buddhists there and they know what's up. If they hate America so much, why don't they leave? Oh wait, no one else wants them in their country, either, and they know that America is they only place that will tolerate their whiny asses.

Thank you.

And some people want more out of their short lives than simply living the American Dream and being just another cogwheel in the machine of society. You're right about people "just wanting to be apart of" the Occupy Wallstreet protests, but they were just a minority. The media wasn't going to interview people who actually had vision and specific goals because then it might have actually caused more people to think about the state of the United States and try to change it.

There's nothing wrong with being a hardworking member of society if that's what you want to do, but they shouldn't hate people with alternative ways of thinking. Of course, I'd rather try and create change in society than just inhabit it. I think you'll find that there are many people who believe in the exact same thing and do not sit around and smoke weed or play x-box.

If our rulers will always be corrupt, then why should we tolerate it. Society will stagnate unless there is constant progression and having people in power who do not genuinely care for humanity is not going to give anyone a decent future.

They don't hate America. If they did, wouldn't it make more sense for them to encourage its destruction by supporting the wars we are involved in and promoting ignorance? Usually people who "whine" and want change are doing so because they like their country and don't want to see it fall to its grave.

I think you're giving "the media" too much credit. I think that there may have been some semblance of a plan, because statistics would say that SOMEONE out there had their s**t together. But the faceless masses didn't know what they were doing, and they were the ones seeking the cameras.

We tolerate the rule, or we become the rulers. If you are ruled, you will always find reasons to hate it, my friend. I think it's an uphill battle to hate those in charge of you. Use the system. Become the power - don't hate it. You can never exert change on the groups of people you piss off. Do you think the "1%" is going to change their minds and give you their money? ******** no. But what if you become one of them? Suddenly you have the power to change things. The 99% can't change anything. You must become them to change them.

I'm an employer and work around second jobs just fine. All of the employers I've ever worked for have done the same for me. I have several friends who support their families by working two or three jobs at a time, and have no problems. Either you're not looking hard enough, or you're unlucky.

There are plenty out there, and even more who claim to be them.

I'm talking specifically about people who don't wash their hair and think that Bob Marley was the extent of Western philosophy.

That's a general jackass with allusions to Rastarfarian culture, not a hippie. And believe me, nobody's going to support THEM

Quote:
People who won't buy anything that is "factory made", and won't eat animals and instead of just doing these things, HAVE to tell me why they're a good person for doing it.

again, those are general jackasses. Hippies are a very specific breed.

People who think that Buddhism is the right way to go, simply because it's against the grain

Brother, that's SO not what a Hippie actually is, take it from someone who knew old burned out acid casualties.

Quote:
People who use the word "counterculture" to describe themselves and others like them. People who rescue dogs and then TELL ME FIVE GODDAMN TIMES that "oh, yeah, she's a rescue". People who think the government's corrupt but isn't sure how or why. People who think puppets are in place because "they are, man". People who listen to the Greatful Dead.

*SIGH* You're using Hippie as too broad a term, man. All of those people are a mish mash of shitheaded values and ideas, very few of which were truly a part of that specific culture.

So don't worry. There's plenty to hate, but Hippies have fallen off the map. They're nothing but curiousities of a ******** up microcosm of history, nothing more. They certain'y aren't "venom" to any society.

I see a lot of people who exhibit all of these values. If they aren't hippies, there must be a social category for them so that we can hate on them.
I assure you, you are describing hippies perfectly. They did not die out with the 60s/70s, it just seems that the music associated with early hippies was good enough to make them tolerable, while present-day hippies just listen to crap like Phish.

I have a full time job.

The two jobs I worked before this did not allow for two jobs and weren't willing to work around them. One was a privately owned company, another was a corporation. It's easy enough here to find someone who does have open availability.

On top of that, like I said, finding one job is difficult enough.

It's not about people not willing to work the hours or get second jobs, it's about their ability to find those jobs to start with.

Which is why I said you were unlucky. Believe me, I know its hard. I had to move 9 hours away from home to keep my job - I was extremely lucky.

The people I'm angry at are the ones who say that there aren't any good jobs and don't even look. Trust me, I knew these people. Working at McDonalds is beneath them when its all they have skills for.

I understand the frustration about people complaining about not having a job but not bothering to apply. But depending on where the person lives it may not be as simple as just going out and looking.

The privately owned company I worked for was in the food service industry, I did the hiring for it. When we collected applications to fill 1 position I would get about 100 serious applications and a good percentage of those where from over qualified people.

Not to mention in my state it's legal to pay minors less an hour than adult so most of the fast food positions go 15/16 year old high school kids with a few adults for morning or third shift.

I agree that there are people looking. I turn down applications all the time, but I respect them for at least trying.

I don't think its really fair to characterize the 99% movement or whatever the heck they call themselves nowadays as entirely hippies. That is like saying the Tea Party movement consisted only of gun nuts who wanted to kill Obama when the reality was that it was a AstroTurf movement funded to get Obama out of office and to promote the influence of the oligarchy. Or saying the Tea Party movement was entirely composed of Fascists when they really were just a bunch of misguided, confused old folks who were told to be afraid of that drat Obama and his evil socialism.

What you are doing is promoting a dehumanizing generalization. A hippie does not actually exist. What you have now are folks of many different varying backgrounds who are simply outraged at the wealth disparity in this nation, especially during this time of economic downturn.

What you are saying makes sense, however, it's pretty difficult for most people to use the system to their advantage and gain a new standing in society's hierarchy. And, for those who somehow do become part of the 1%, they may have the power to change things but it it is highly unlikely that they will want to change anything because wealth and power become like an addiction after a certain period. It's a continuation of the cycle and nothing more, in my opinion.

But, honestly, I don't show as much support to "hippies" and other subcultures because they demand changes in the economic structure of society as I do for their demands for less government control. They were a necessary group in the '60s because they promoted free expression and free speech in the midst of a uniform and materialistic era, which is why I have at least some respect for them. A similar movement would prove to be very beneficial if it were to occur in the United States at this time when it seems like we've lost a large amount of our rights for the illusion of security.
The real hippies didn't die-- most of them became yuppies when they realized their counter-cultural sensitivities were marketable, or they joined a commune with no electricity and fell off the map. These communes are largely self-sufficient, with the hippies putting in the work to grow their own food and working on products to provide what cash they do need. Several of these are still around, but no one cares, and I imagine that's how they'd prefer to keep it.

The kids that run around listening to Umphrey's McGee, with expensive, limited run pins in their ordered-off-the-internet hats, raging out at Allgood or Summer Camp-- they aren't hippies. They will call themselves hippies, they will associate themselves with the idea of hippies, but they do a disservice to the ideal of hippies, and to themselves.
