Why ONLY Arabic/Muslim immigration?
I think his stated reason is terrorism. People have accused him of simple racism and xenophobia, but it's kind of hard to prove such allegations.

That is racist, and xenophobic. What can't African immigrants be terrorists, or Europeans, or Asians?

Because they aren't? It wasn't a African immigrant that killed Theo van Gogh. This isn't about terrorism, this is about a dangerous religious ideology.

The funny thing about ideologies is that they aren't limited by race.
Racial profiling doesn't assume that all people of race X are guilty; it simply acknowledges that they're more likely to be guilty than race Y.

They're certainly more likely to sling crack, that's for sure.

But this is all off topic. What does this have to do with the serious attack on free speech that the Netherlands is making?

I'm absolutely crushed that racial issues are such a taboo that stormfront has the more enlightened point of view. That shouldn't ******** happen. I'm even more frustrated that people are calling Geert 'far-right' like it is some kind of insult. This is just a bad situation period. The argument isn't even about Wilders being correct, it's about freedom of speech. The fact that he's on trial should scare you. If it doesn't, read the article until it does.

If he is actually prosecuted, it could very well be the death knell for the western world.

The Netherlands have decided that they don't like it when their government officials slander entire ethnic groups. So long as the appropriate legislation is in place to prevent such actions, I don't see an issue with it.

Hm, that's interesting. I do absolutely support his right to free speech, but it's just common sense to be polite like that in public speaking. France is doing something similar, though: actually passing anti-Muslim law that prohibits burqas in public. As long as all Geert Wilders can do is talk his mouth off, though, I don't see a problem. As long as religious freedom is protected... Jesus.

Burqa's not really religious in nature. It's also a head to toe covering that completely hides the person under it. Not a safe thing.
As for his speech? If the voters don't like it, then they can vote him out of office. This? This is nothing more than PC gone crazy.

For freedom of speech in the Netherlands, anyway. Denmark has overturned hate speech legislation in their Supreme Court.

Regardless, there are things that can act in Wilders' favor. Jury nullification comes to mind. The judge can also find him innocent in a bench trial regardless of his guilt. If he's convicted, superior courts can overturn the law.

It's not exactly over. But fact of the matter is, that free speech as a concept is on contest in the Netherlands. The world is watching, and if Wilders' so much as gets convicted, it clearly and distinctly places the Netherlands beneath the United States in terms of civil liberties.

Yes, even if they recognize gay marriage. Free speech is more important than gays marrying. Sorry if that pisses anybody off, but it's the truth.

No. Your point?

Yes, and on a begrudging, idealist level, he has my half-hearted support. Then again, to invoke the right to free speech to defend racists and bigots on a regular basis tarnishes how people view the right.

In my opinion, he went around shooting off his mouth and pissed off the wrong people. I have no sympathy for him.

So... no, it doesn't. The fact that he has your "half hearted" support means that you have a "half hearted" support for free speech.

Case in point, supporting the concept means you support the liberty of others to say things that you just plain don't like.

My point is the man is on trial for speech. He's not a fringe lunatic. His party is doing very well at the polls. Better then any other political party in the country even. Here's an op-ed article on the whole debacle. This is Orwellian suppression.
