Welcome to Gaia! ::

Geert Wilders is being tried for "hate speech". [1] The comments they consider hate speech include things like saying that no Muslim should be allowed into the Netherlands and comparing the Qur'an to Mein Keimpf.

Geert Wilders is a Member of Parliament in the Netherlands. Trying politicians for their opinions and perspectives is something Joseph Stalin did to his opponents.

If the courts find Geert Wilders guilty of hate speech, they make the Netherlands a de jure Muslim state, since criticizing that religion and no other is prohibited.
Hm, that's interesting. I do absolutely support his right to free speech, but it's just common sense to be polite like that in public speaking. France is doing something similar, though: actually passing anti-Muslim law that prohibits burqas in public. As long as all Geert Wilders can do is talk his mouth off, though, I don't see a problem. As long as religious freedom is protected... Jesus.

He wants to prohibit Muslim (and by extension, more or less, Arabic) immigration.

And he, a public figure, said this in public, and it freaked people out for the same reason you'd be freaked out if your senator said that Chinese people could never be truly Americans so they should all be kicked out. Yes, it's ridiculous that he's being tried for this, but your tone and your attitude make me want to disagree with you badly.

Burqa's not really religious in nature. It's also a head to toe covering that completely hides the person under it. Not a safe thing.
As for his speech? If the voters don't like it, then they can vote him out of office. This? This is nothing more than PC gone crazy.
I was wondering if anyone would make a topic about this. Pat Condell made a very angry youtube video about the subject, and I haven't really heard a solid argument against wilders yet. I doubt I ever will.

Geert
The statements I have made, the comparisons I have drawn — are they true?
Because, if something is true, how can it be illegal?

I'm very concerned, because the more I try to educate myself on these kind of cultural issues, the further I slide into viewpoints that would be considered racist by our society. I don't think I'd make a good Nazi.

Like I said, it's just blatantly stalinesque.

Why ONLY Arabic/Muslim immigration?

I think his stated reason is terrorism. People have accused him of simple racism and xenophobia, but it's kind of hard to prove such allegations.

Let me guess, you're one of those people who thinks that liberals are out to destroy Christianity and let fags take over our country.

That is racist, and xenophobic. What can't African immigrants be terrorists, or Europeans, or Asians?

Because they aren't? It wasn't a African immigrant that killed Theo van Gogh. This isn't about terrorism, this is about a dangerous religious ideology.

The funny thing about ideologies is that they aren't limited by race.

Of course not. The key phrase here is "Statistical Significance".
