This is my temper speaking...

Tell me, how do you get rid of all emotions?
Happiness is temporary. It leads to agony, which leads to frustration and rage...
I feel like I need to kill someone right now!

You become a Stoic. Happiness is found in virtue, not external things.
happiness does not lead to those things. The external things that you rely on to make you happy lead to those emotions. only YOU can make yourself happy.
Anger and rage lead to happiness

Your arguement is cyclic.

I thought Epictetus taught that negative emotion comes from our negative perception of an event, and that the only way to achieve eternal bliss is to train your brain to wish for tangible goals and to have positive perceptions of each event (find the positives of everything).

You might be correct, although I wasn't speaking of Epictetus. I think my signature, which I have changed before refreshing my page, might demonstrate this.

I don't think that's quite right.

Maybe I should just be a Stoic.

It was Zeno of Citium. My mistake. But my mistakes brought me knowledge; ergo, happiness! biggrin

You people are suffocating me!
The only valuable, yet annoying advice that came out of this is that one creates one's own happiness.

No one is suffocating you. It is your notions that are suffocating you. The one you speak of simply reworded what I said.

I think it is you who said it. I rephrased it to sound a little less like speaking to an eight-year-old.
And no, these people aren't suposed to post in here. This is just stupid.
When someone says something negative, goody-two-shoes come and try to make it all better with their "kind" words of "wisdom". Honestly? I expected some really profound responses. Even if I found "count 'til ten" I would have been satisfied. But these are all just theories. Unexplained theories - which I have no problem unraveling, but it wouldn't kill anyone to write more than one line.
Also, let me educate you (and whoever else reads this) a bit. If someone has frustration or anger issues, or even suffers from depression or sadness or whatever, do not, for ****'s sake, say that person brought it upon himself, to get over it, to think happy thoughts, or any of those. You might mean well, but it just worsen's the person's state. It's seen as an insult - just because the person is having trouble with life, it doesn't mean they are not worthy of a propper, intellectual and compassionate answer.

Also, your reply can be debatable. Extroverts find their energy in external sources. Luckily, I'm an introvert and thus your statement can be clarified.

It's your notions that you or anyone would perceive whatever as an insult.

"If a person gave your body to any stranger he met on his way, you would certainly be angry. And do you feel no shame in handing over your own mind to be confused and mystified by anyone who happens to verbally attack you?" (Enchiridion, 28 )

You don't understand external things aright. External things are things outside of our power or control.

I'm sorry you're feeling so upset. Trust me, there've been times I've wanted to get rid of my emotions too. If I knew the answer I'd tell you. But following your cycle of emotions, maybe you can take solace in the fact that happiness WILL come again. Emotions will continue to exist, but they will change. smile heart
