Also, (dont flame me for this) if people evolved from apes, why are there still apes?

"It's the same as saying that many Americans are descended from Europeans - but there are still Europeans!"

Though technically we share an ancestor with apes, we didn't evolve from them.

Technically, we are apes.

Technically we are in the same family as apes.

And thus, we are apes. I don't see any particular problem.

Not quite.
Apple is from the same family as Windows but Apple =/= Windows... And yes that's a bad example, but I couldn't think of a decent one.

o.O

Perhaps you could try again, or explain in more detail how Apple (a company) and Windows (an operating system) are in the same "family"?

Additionally, humans are a so called "great ape".

Apple is an OS. Windows is an OS.

Chimps are apes. Humans are apes.

Ratreoz: God, why do people not worship Me?
God: People are stupid. You know that.
Ratreoz: Yes. I just don't see it as a valid excuse.

>< Crap... I was using it to show two OS's are from the same family being OS's but that doesn't mean that they are equal.

But they're both OSes. Saying "Humans are apes" is like saying "Windows is an OS."

Humans are still apes, dear. When did humans magically become separate from the other great apes?

OK, I should illustrate the issue here with another example.

http://www.naturephoto-cz.com/photos/sevcik/green-iguana--iguana-iguana-1.jpg

This is a green iguana.

http://www.wildherps.com/images/herps/standard/desert_iguana.jpg

This is a desert iguana. Both inhabit the taxonomic family of Iguanidae, although they occupy two different genera. Does that mean one is not an iguana?

Define "equal" for us, while you're at it. I'm curious over your use of the term here.

EDIT: To wit, you seem confused over taxonomic ranks. We occupy the superfamily Hominoidea, which includes gibbons, gorillas, chimpanzees, orangutans and other apes. Any animal thus classified would qualify as an ape, given taxonomic criteria.

Nnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnno, because "APE" is the set to which all humans and other apes (chimps, gorillas, orangutans) belong. Just because we conventionally lump those other primates under the heading "ape" doesn't mean humans are not apes like OS X isn't Apple.

I mean, here in M&R we have kind of a schizophrenia on the subject. We either have 'My faith tells me homos r bad' or we have Eteponge.
