Well, evolution is a directly observed fact. The theory of evolution is an attempt by our species to understand how evolution occurs.
But anyways, there really is nothing to suggest that species were designed. There is plenty to suggest that they are imperfect and are gradually improving to suite their environment, but few, if any, species are 'perfectly' suited for their environments/diet/etc.

The problem with saying Evolution is fact is there is nothing that backs it up. Its called the missing link for a reason. For us to have "evolved" there would be transistionary fossils of the progress that we took over hundreds of years. While several have showed up, all have been proven false. Not one of the ancient human/ape hybrid skulls or bones has ever been legit.
Its there that Evolution falls apart. You can find similarities all day long between all sorts of creatures, but you will never find the transitionary stages, or any proof of them.
The reason Evolution is considered "fact" at this point is because most of modern society has abandoned religion in any form. To talk of a higher entity in public is just begging to have an mental angish lawsuit thrown at you. The idea of a God is so openly oppossed that we have to teach something. Thus, we teach a theory that is nothing more than just that, a theory.
This can be looped back to the fact that God doesn't want to prove his existance. To prove it defeats the purpose of faith and believe, and kills the freedom of choice that we were allowed. You can find proof, but nothing definate. Same thing with Evolution. You can find things that say it could be, but nothing concrete.
