黃金

what does the above stand for? i looked it up and apparently it's gold/golden as in important and valuable, but just to make sure i decided to ask you international people here. rolleyes

i know it's not very original to get a chinese tattoo but i have my reasons. firstly the meaning of the tattoo is rather related to the story than the tattoo itself as an image. i know what it means to me and that's important.

i was really worried about my health for 3 years and my self esteem was low, i had loads of mental problems because i was constantly thinking i would die. and finally i found out that everything's alright and i seem to stick around for 60 more years (to make the most out of my driving license at least wink ).. yea so the "gold" would be like a stamp to remind me that i'm beautiful, young, strong and alive and i should take good care of myself since it's the only chance i have and it can be taken away from me.

secondly.. i sure could have a more personal kind of art piece. then again the sad fact is that the personality changes throughout our lives and in the 60 years time i might not be so happy with an odd tattoo that covers all my back so i want it to be neutral and small.

i thought of putting it on the back of my neck or a little lower. about 5x3cm or so..

i'd like some opinions and comments on the symbols themselves. after all i make the decision myself of course but critic is always good before i actually get inked.

Why are you choosing the Chinese symbol? Are you Chinese?

Well what nationality are you? It might be better to get a tattoo that's in the language of your ancestors, if you like your family.

Anyway, LD isn't exactly the place to get someone to translate a Chinese character.

I've heard that some people in japan like the way English words look, so they'll graffiti words like "cheese" on walls.

I'm pretty sure they didn't care.
Everyone gets chinese symbols
黄金

In Japanese its pronounces "Ougon" "Kogane" "Kin"

Just means it shines like gold, or precious gold.

Its kind of a misunderstood word in todays society, so it may have other "meanings" but they may not be accurate.

Kinda like Their, and There.
If the only reason you're getting it in Chinese is so most people where you currently live can't read it, why not choose something symbolic that's less of a crapshoot.
Like the alchemical symbol for gold. Or, if you're dead set on a language that doesn't use the roman alphabet, see what the word for gold is in Korean so at least you're not messing with logograms/pictograms.

i think this is actually a nice idea. though it's the same symbol for sun anyways.

i sure like my origin but the written language is pretty new. it would go to something like shaman symbols for it to be anything else but a modern word. and that's too related to superstitious people and fans of heavy music biggrin

If you dig it, I know there's a page out there with variants.

I'm afraid I don't quite follow on the second bit, but I wish you well in whatever you choose.
