Well, I didn't look in his mouth at his teeth, but my boyfriend said he didn't see anything odd or out of place, I'll look again tomorrow morning (it's too dark to see tonight).

But when he was licking me, he didn't have bad breath just typical dog breath.

If it is lymph nodes what would be the process from the vet? Is it a serious thing or pills or ???

If they don't get larger, how long should I wait them out?

Enlarged lymph nodes are usually a sign of an infection. The submandibular lymph nodes are in the area you describe. We frequently see them enlarged with oral or ear infections.

On the waiting, it is hard to say. If there are no other problems..... I would just keep an eye on him.

The vet would check those nodes as well as other nodes in the body (in the shoulder, armpit, groin, and knee areas) to see if they were enlarged also. He or she might take a needle aspirate from the node to see the cells involved and if any infectious agents can be seen. The treatment would start with some antibiotics unless something else were found on the aspirate.

I'm sorry, how old did you say this dog was?

I got him at about 10-12 weeks old (we aren't sure, he was a stray) but about 6 months after we got him he began hiking his leg when he pottied.

I've had him for 2 years this month

Oh good. That makes it more likely that it is an infection than cancer. How are his ears?

I have a fish how do i know when it needs something

this is a very vague question. I would be able to answer this in a vague way. When it acts abnormally.

All fish are different, there's no set standard for how a fish does something, so defining "abnormal" I cannot do. All fish swim differently, and act differently. This is where it comes a thing of knowing your pet and their normal moves.

If your fish one day starts swimming oddly, not eating it's normal amount, pooping more or less than usual, rubbing against decorations oddly, swimming is less or more active, if there is odd coloration, if there is odd bumps, if there's odd fraying in tails or fins.

The list goes on, but I think the picture has been painted.

There's nothing noticeably off, but I'm also not looking for anything, I'll check those too, but I didn't notice anything odd or off as in scars or crusting or anything

First, I want to thank all the vets/vet-tech involved in this thread.

Now on to the question.

I have a 3 year old Belgian Shepherd who was apparently a genetic mistake. He's prone to ear infections, and for some reason his skin produces a scaly goop where is fur is no longer present.

I've taken him to several vets, and had skin scrapes and blood work done on him. They've insisted that the only thing wrong with him is that he doesn't produce enough oils to keep his skin clean.

My boyfriend and I have resorted to giving him benedryl (to stop the constant scratching and chewing) and weekly baths with a tar based shampoo.

My question is, is there anything I can do to help ease my dog's obvious discomfort? The bath only lasts as long as he's in the tub, he'll start scratching right away and the Benedryl doesn't seem to be working anymore.

I've also changed his food to Pro Pac with condroigten (sp?) and a few other supplements, I've also started putting oils into his food, and while some treatments seem to help for a bit, they never last.

Feel free to PM me, if responding here isn't convenient.

Thank you once again for your time biggrin

Heartfelt Sadness
Hi I have a question.

About a year ago I found a small kitten abandon by its mother. So I did research and gave it kitten formula and all. Now she about 1 year old and is very small. I feed her everyday and treats like fancy feast can once every week. I named her Meiko. Well, fleas are everywhere where I lived cause I live in the backwoods and give all my animals (2 dogs and 1 cat) a bath regularly to control the fleas the best I can. Well today I gave Meiko a bath and afterwards I dried her well and let her free around the house. About ten or fifteen minutes later I gave her a treat for being a good kitty which was some canned fancy feast. She was actting pretty normal then half way through her food she went under the kitchen table and started to meow loudly. I went to check on her and she ran from me and started to vomit. It was almost projectile. She vomited all of the fancy feast then ran to the room in the back of my house and hid. She came out about twenty minutes later and started to meow loudly again and vomited. She hid under the living room table for about twenty minute then went to lay down on her favorite bed. She now has been acting fairly normal and been drinking water and had a few bites to eat. Did she have a reaction to the kitty flea soap? But I've used it on her twice before and she hasn't had a reaction or could she possible have worms? I'm worried about her cause I've been taking care of her since she was a wee kitten.

Thanks for taking the time to read this and help me...

Marii

It could be that she ingested some of the soap and insecticide. That can cause some stomach irritation that is not really a "reaction." It is just a response to ingestion. It could also be a hairball or an upset stomach. Feed her very lightly today and tomorrow. If she continues to vomit, she needs to see a vet.

I hope Meiko feels better soon.

Thanks, She smeems to feel alot better and chasing the bugs that get into the house and acting pretty normal. Your a big help on here. Keep it up!

Ok my boyfriend and I just got two kittens. They're about 5-6 months old and they have flees. We've given them a flee bath (more than once) We've even got them flee collars AND we've sprayed them with flee spray stuff... BUT the gosh darn flees won't go away.....

Also: At my mothers house we have 4 kittens all sisters, Siamese. They're over a year old now and the runt of the litter. Noodle, has been limping a lot. Ever since she was born. It's her left front leg (arm). We feel a slight bump there and it's nothing serious it doesn't hurt her but she hardly uses it. Should we bring her to the vet?

Another thing... We have a very old cat he's 19 he's losing his fur up the wazoo and he's stealing food and biting people thinking they're food. He's become quite the annoyence. What should we do? He's a tabby and losing his morals.

Sorry, trying to keep up with the new and catch up on the old! And hold down a job and take care of a family! That was not a complaint. Just an explanation.

Go to the vet and get Advantage, Frontline, Revolution, Promeris, etc. Over the counter products are usually neither safe nor effective.

re: Noodle- If your cat is limping for more than a few days, she should be checked by your vet. If she has been limping since birth, there may or may not be something the vet can do to fix the problem, but there are medications that may make her more comfortable.

Your old man definitely needs to see the vet. It sounds like he may have an overactive thyroid. This can cause all the symptoms you are describing. Hyperthyroidism is totally treatable. It is not a moral issue but a medical one. If he is also experiencing some senility, there are also some medications that might help him.

Thank you smile

hi. I need help with feeding a turtle. neutral

I found this turtle in the flood while it was raining heavily, and I decided to adopt it for while waiting for its owner to claim it.

It's a pig nosed turtle and I googled it, says it eats leafy vegetables and umm.. turtle pellets?

but since the day I found it, it hasn't eaten anything yet gonk I gave it leafy vegetables and I also gave it the pellets I bought from the pet store but it wouldn't eat gonk

how many days can a turtle survive without eating? I've had it for five days now and I'm afraid it would die because it wouldn't eat.

where do I place the turtle? - it's in the bath tub now filled with water.

why is the turtle restless? it continually scratches my tub and swims around like it's looking for something.. I'm not sure gonk

I'm sorry if any of my questions seem stupid I really don't know anything about turtles, I would take it to the vet but... I don't know what for eek

also, this is irrelevant to the other questions.. how do I know if it's male or female?

I'm sorry for this but please answer gonk

thank you in advance.

I am not a turtle person, but there is a turtle guy on the thread. I will see if I can locate him to look at this.

Does the turtle have both dry and wet area to be in right now? Does not seem to be an issue for this species as they are mostly aquatic.
How deep is the water he is in?
What is the temperature of his environment?
Is he getting any UV light?
How is his food being presented to him?

Not all reptiles are sexually dimorphic (where the sexes look different), so sometimes you have to do genetic testing.

Do you live in Australia? i.e. Are you sure this is a pet and not a displaced wild animal?

1. Yes, the turtle have both dry and wet areas it could go to.
2. And the water is deep enough for it to swim in.
3. I'm not sure about the temperature D; but I guess it's warm enough, it is never cold here.
4. No, it isn't getting any UV light.
5. and I placed the food inside the tub and on the dry place it could go to. It hasn't touched any food I've given. crying

And as for the last question, No I live in the Philippines. I'm sure it is a pet because there isn't any animal reservoir or a zoo near me. It could only come from a neighbor or someone near xp Although, I'm quite sure it's from the exotic pet trade because well.. it's quite exotic looking and turtles aren't normally kept as pets here.. I'm gonna hand it over to whoever I could hand it over once the typhoon is over.

Thanks for your time smile

Is he otherwise healthy? Any breathing difficulties while awake? Any nasal discharge?

Have there been any changes in the environment recently? Increased dust, etc.

I suspect that it is not something to worry about unless one of those other things is going on.

Hmm, it sounds like you are doing everything ok. You might try increasing the temp though.

A few articles on feeding:

edit:

found some additional info from an expert. Check the water temperature as it needs to be well above 70 degrees F, but not much higher than 80 degrees.

Crooked teeth are usually not due to poisons or anything. Usually it is genetic, so nothing you could have done about it. Occasionally it is due to something like trauma, but you would have known about that. Nothing to worry about.
