Welcome to Gaia! ::

My dog has a lot of bright red blood in his stool to the point where there is more blood than stool. He still is very energetic and has an appetite. Yet he doesn't seem to be uncomfortable or in pain. What could it be?

He's a nine year old yorkshire terrier and this has been happening since this morning though he did have a small amount in it last night as well. We do not give him bones to eat though he does try to eat kleenex behind our backs if at all possible. He was also throwing up a few days ago coupled with diarrhea. His diet and environment have not been changed. His gums are pale.

The only reason that I haven't taken him to the vet yet is that he doesn't seem to feel sick. He is still just as hyper as ever and his appetite is good. That and I don't think I have enough money right now for a vet exam... >.<

This is really abnormal and I think you should take him to see the vet as soon as possible. In a dog of his age, it is unlikely that it is parvo, but it could be HGE (hemorrhagic gastroenteritis) and it is potentially fatal.

Please take him in soon.

Let me know how things go.

Ok so I have a cat, her name is pumkin. She is really skinny to the point where is started to bother me. I give her food and water and I make sure the food is seperated from my other cats food. She has not gained any weight. Should I try different food? A diffrent place to put the food? Should I see a vet? Does my other cat effect pumkin? I can feel her all her bones but she looks happy all the time so can you help me?

Any time a cat is losing weight, it is a sign of a problem (unless you are on a weight management program from your vet). She needs to be examined and bloodwork run at your soonest convenience.

Good luck! I hope your baby feels better soon.

Hi there. I have been reading a lot into this thread and I love it! I have a few questions so bear with me sweatdrop

First of all, last year about this time one of my cats (I have 2) had broken his right hind leg. It was close to the joint and it was the femur. I paid over 1000$ to have it fixed because he is one of the nicest friendly cats ever, I even have him trained to that if he is at something he ain't spose to be at, I literally snap my fingers and he stops imediatly. Whats even better if I catch him doing something bad and its already done he automaticlly goes into his kennel. Anywho, he was about 6-9 months when this happened and exactly a week before he was neutered. He is fine now and very active and plays with my other cat whom i also have another question about, but with my baby boy Oliver, i was wondering if I should expect any health problems related to this when he is older (arthitis, etc.)? Like I said he is very active now and the vet said it healed well. It was either get the leg fixed or put him down, and I have too much of a heart to do that to him!

Okay, now for my other kitty! She is about the same age as my boy Oliver and about half the size! She seems to be in perfect health but I was wondering was there any reason for her to be so small? She eats well, uses the pan regularly and plays as well with Oliver. Also she is VERY timid. She will come to you if she wants attention, but otherwise, she is practically scared of everything. (We named her Sketchy because of this lol) Also, we got her from a local pet store and when we got her she had some kinda of cat flu, which the store gave us meds to give to her. (If I showed you pics of size comparsion you would only say she is still a kitten)

Never had a hint of trouble after for each of them.

Ok, my last question for now, do you know much about reptiles? I have an Iguana, a Corn snake, and a Milk snake. There is nothing wrong with them they are perfect. (I care for my pets more than my anything else) All i wanted to know is do you know anything about reptiles, where I live, I would have to go out of town I think for a Reptile vet.

Thank you for you time to read this looong note and hope to hear from you soon.
Britt (Crazy animal lady) <3

1. If the leg healed well, I would not expect any future problems. If joints were not affected, I would not expect arthritis to be any more likely in Oliver than any other cat. Sadly, most vets underdiagnose arthritis in cats. But that is a lecture for another time.

2. Likely both genetics and gender. Some cats are just small in stature. For some breeds, females are only six lbs. I had a tiny cat growing up. She was five lbs, but perfectly normal. There are a few diseases and conditions that can cause stunting of growth, but they are uncommon and the cats appear ill. If you are worried, have her checked out by your vet. When was she last there? But I suspect she is perfectly normal.

3. I know a little. There are some herp people around here who might know more. Veterinarypartner.com has some good reptile information too.

I absolutely love cats! Love them, adore them, they are so cute. My friend has 5 cats, and the thing is her one cat is going to have kittens and said if I want one she'll give me one. The only problem is I'm allergic to them, to the point I erupt in hives or rashes.

Is there any kind of allergy medicine I can get so I won't have these reactions? I really want a cat, it's just I hate the fact I'm allergic to them. If there are any over the counter ones please mention them, if not what do I go to a doctor and ask for meds?

Well allergies are a bit of a people problem not a pet problem. Some things you can do to help you live with a cat are:

1. vacuum regularly, daily ideally
2. restrict the cat from your bedroom
3. wipe the cat with a moist cloth daily (this removes the cat's saliva, which is the allergen, from the fur.
4. bathe the cat regularly (cats can be taught to tolerate baths well if they are trained from kittenhood like show cats)
5. Most of the newer allergy medicines are pretty good, i.e. zyrtec, allegra, etc, but you really should talk to your doctor about that one.

There are certain breeds that claim to be hypoallergenic. Results may vary. But I do work with several Cornish Rex breeders and they are pretty low on the allergenic scale.

Hi, this isn't urgent, just wondering. I have two black cats sisters, and occasinally the larger of the two will have 5+ scabs on her rear, is this somesort of disease, or is it somehow normal?? They usually aren't big, but there is always a lot. They don't happen often. this is kinda gross, but because she is large, she can't lick her rear, my mom said something about a gland back there? Also, the other cat, is starting to bite the fur off in panels on her front legs, how can I get her to stop?? Sometimes her left eye will have this weird white-ish fluid comeing out of it. She squints when this happens.

Sounds like your kitties have allergies. It is not urgent, but you should have them checked by a vet. In the mean time, put a little neosporin on the cat's scabs and distract her for a few minutes while it soaks in. All the symptoms they are exhibiting can be related to the allergies.

I have a question about my Mothers dog..
Its kind of long and sorry about the lengthy post.. but I saw so much good information that I cannot help it.

[snip]

Is there any kind of advice, good or bad, that you can give me on this? How to talk to my Mom about this or to treat Blue and make her more comfortable?
I am truly lost! lol..
Thanks for ANY input any of you have.

This is a really hard situation. Your mom is in denial about the fact that Blue is dying. She has the opportunity to save Blue some unneeded suffering by helping her move along (euthanasia). She is making the dog live in pain, so that she will not have to face the pain of losing Blue.

Tell your mom that she is really not extending Blue's life, but extending her death. It sounds like she has cancer (the dog not your mom) and it has progressed to the point where she is suffering. You can try talking to the vet yourself, telling them your dog needs pain relief. There are medicines that can be given at end of life stages like this, but they must be prescribed.

Good luck with dealing with your mom. I know how painful this is, for both of you. I will keep you and Blue in my thoughts. PM me if you need to.
I'm simply curious about something, even though it's too late to really help.

My parents and I found a pair of kittens in a bush about two months ago now. They were very young, and we were concerned, because we live in the woods. They were mewling very loudly, enough to attract predators like owls and coyotes, especially if we managed to hear them. We've never found the mother, so we took them in.

I noticed something right away, and that was that the male of the two was a lot more curious and active, and the female tended to hang back or follow him around. I was concerned, but not too much since she would drink from the eyedropper we fed them from (they were so young that the animal shelter wouldn't take them off our hands).

Anyways, even when the male started eating dry food, she never really took interest in anything much and tended to stick with suckling. Her behavior was never very playful unless her brother started to attack her. We tried to use a laser pointer to get her to play once, but she's only really stare at it and didn't chase it. She also rarely meowed, but we didn't think that too unusual, since our own male cat is usually silent too.

Do you believe anything was wrong with her in particular? We found her dead under the recliner one morning, and since it's my Dad's recliner, he thinks that he accidentally killed her by sitting down after she crawled under. This really concerns me, because he feels very awful about it. I know it's wrong to hope that it was something wrong with the kitten, but I'm sure it would help my Dad feel better, even if we all know it wasn't his fault if he killed her.

What the HELL is your problem? Are you 3? You better be be joking, because that is... sick, wrong, and... terrible. What would make you think of putting a KITTEN in the MICROWAVE for TWO MINUTES with NO AIR?!

Leonidas is dead, why'd you bother asking?

Your parents.. what are they gonna do?

hello again xana, just thought I'd come in and give an update on my puppy.
she was just having an allergic reaction to the spray our apartment sprayed in our yard.

another question though.
my kitty I noticed has been stinking really bad lately.
I gave her a bath tonight, and now I realize (really wierdly) noticed when she climbed on my lap that it was her butt that has been really stinky.
do you know what it could be?
