Some ordinary man with a baseball bat stands over them and bashes in their heads.

In March, the rifles and clubs of Canadian seal killers will bring chaotic violence to the nursery floes of the harp and hood seals.

The Canadian seal massacre is the largest mass slaughter of a marine mammal population on earth. It is a subsidized orgy of blood where seals scream in agony as bullets rip through their bodies and brutish clubs smash young and fragile skulls. The beautiful bluish white ice floes off Labrador and Newfoundland and in the Gulf of St. Lawrence will run red with innocent blood.

The annual spring commercial quota is 325,000 baby seals. The actual kill is much higher because the quota is exceeded every year. In addition, the Inuit sealers kill another 10,000 harp seals every summer. The Canadian lumpfish fishery takes an annual incidental kill of another 17,000 on average each year. Many thousands of others die in nets, traps, and are shot by ignorant fishermen. Even without a seal hunt, hundreds of thousands of seal pups will die in March 2009 because of lack of ice.

A letter for a letter.
Let Prime Minister Stephen Harper and/or Loyola Hearn (Minister of Fisheries and Oceans; yes he is a dude) know how you feel about this senseless and cruel hunt slaughter of defenseless seal pups and you'll not only be voicing your opinion and dislike of a barbaric practice that has no place in this, the past, or coming decades, but you'll also get a free* donation letter for doing it. Everyone loves stuff..!

____1. To qualify to receive a letter you must first send a letter. And you'll probably need a digital camera too - or at the very least a scanner.
____2. On a scrap piece of paper write down your username and stick it next to your letter when you take a picture of it or scan it.
____3. Send the letter! And don't forget to upload and post your picture here in the thread or PM it to either myself or Grimmjow.


When you submit your picture we'll put you on the list below. At the end of every week we'll randomly draw and select people from the list to receive letters - the number of letters will vary from week to week depending on how many letters we have on hand/our funds (there will be at the very least 5 a week). When someone wins a letter their name will be crossed off of the list thus voiding them from winning anymore - giving other people a chance. This contest will be going on for months so you have plenty of chances to win.

If there are less than 5 participants in any given week they will all receive a letter.

Please send a message to the Honourable Stavros Dimas, the Commissioner for Employment and Social Affairs asking him to convey your concerns to the European Parliament with a request that the members vote to protect the seal by banning all seal products into European markets.

The Canadian government is spending millions of dollars sending delegations to Europe to lobby against the ban. The seals need people to let the Parliament know that the majority of people worldwide want the largest mass slaughter of a marine mammal species in the world to be ended.

In writing be aware of the following fact:

1. The Canadian government is trying to convince the Parliament that the seals being killed are all adults. This is because the government of Canada defines an “adult” seal as any seal over three weeks of age.
2. If the hunt is “humane” as the Canadian government insists it is then why is it illegal to observe the killing of a seal.
3. The harps seals are also being threatened by global warming which is causing loss of ice habitat and this is not factored into the quota decisions of the government.
4. This is the largest slaughter of a marine mammal species in the world.
5. The Canadian government has rejected offers to create alternative employment or to have people pay the sealers to not kill seals.
6. Seal pups have been filmed suffering in agony on the ice after being clubbed, stabbed, shot or kicked by sealers.
7. The government of Canada tries to link the seal hunt with aboriginal communities despite the fact that the commercial hunt is not an aboriginal hunt. No one is opposing Inuit sealing in the far north. The opposition is to the mass slaughter in Eastern Canada especially Newfoundland where the aboriginal peoples were exterminated a century ago. There are no native communities in Newfoundland.
8. The Canadian Department of Fisheries and Oceans has a record of incompetence with regard to management of the fisheries. Every single commercial fishery in Canada is in trouble because of DFO mismanagement.

This year is looking more promising than ever. The European Union is considering a complete ban on seal products, a bill to ban the hunt has been introduced in the Canadian senate for the first time since the ’70s, and the general demand for seal products is shrinking worldwide.

An end to the hunt seems inevitable, but it won’t happen without continued pressure.


1. Attend a rally
If you live near one of these scheduled rallies in various countries, show up with signs or costumes to make the plight of the seals known to the general public. If anything, you’re sure to meet some like-minded people and have a good time.


2. Ask Canadian politicians to support the seal hunt ban


3. Thank Senator Mac Harb for sponsoring the bill to end the hunt
Canadian Senator Mac Harb is the first senator in decades to sponsor a bill in opposition to the seal hunt. Not a single other senator has expressed any support for his bill, so chances are that it won’t get anywhere this time. Regardless, to encourage Harb to reintroduce the bill in the future, he needs to know that there are millions of people across the world who support his effort. Shoot an email here: [e-mail]


4. Ask the European Union Parliament to pass the ban on seal products
In Defense of Animals suggests that you fill out the “Brief Request” section of this form email with the words “Please ban seal products from EU territory” and then specifically state in the Your Request section something to the extent of “Please ban products derived from seals from being imported into the EU, exported from it, or even transported through EU territory in Brussels on 1 April 2009.”


5. Start boycotting Canadian seafood — and ask friends to as well
If you eat fish, try to check the country of origin before buying. A boycott on Canadian seafood began in 2004 and continues to this day with the support of the Humane Society of the united States, Harpseals.org, Animal Alliance of Canada, and Sea Shepherd.
