Whether or not it is selfish to commit suicide is dependent upon the situation, like most actions.

There isn't some blanket statement you can make in either direction.

You can claim selfishness regardless of scenario or cause of suicide.

All suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem. Therefore making it selfish.

That is not how selfishness is defined, that is you repeating phrases without comprehension.

I figure that it would be inferred that just letting all the others deal with the problem at hand and not standing up to it like everyone else would be selfish.

The problem at hand might very well be dealt with by suicide if the problem is a personal one. If the problem is one's own feelings then there's nothing left for others to deal with.

As if everyone else stands up to their problems. Lol.

This has always been a topic that has confused me.

People always claim that those who commit suicide or want to commit suicide are selfish, because it effects the people around them who love them. They want that person in their lives and it would be depressing for them if they were to lose that person.

But isn't it really the same way for the person on the receiving end? This person clearly wants to end their life. They are suffering, and they want to end that suffering by not living anymore. But those who want them alive ridicule them for being suicidal, and force them to stay alive, thus making them suffer even further because they want to be dead. In a way, it's also selfish to force them into something they don't want, torturing them for YOUR own well-being and satisfaction.

Discuss.

Note: Don't bring anything up about "getting help instead", that's not what the topic is about.

in many civilizations before our time and day, there were certain circumstances where suicide was revered, almost idolized in some cases. the japanese & Norse. the japanese used suicide as a means to reclaim honor after defeat in combat, or the dishonor of their family name. The norse used suicide as a last resort means if they were out numbered after a fierce battle. generally with approval from the enemy leader after having either 1. had their own leader fight and loose in single combat, or 2. their leader saw it fit to offer the enemy their swords through their bodies.

suicide is a touchy subject to some...but to others, it's just part of life.

I honestly don't see how one can gain personal profit or pleasure from taking one's own life. So, no.
Yes! It hurts everyone around that person who loves them. On top of that, everyone else has to make the best of this hellhole. Most people go through depression. Letting go means that person is weak. They need to get over themselves and do something for someone else for once.

Correct. A set can have an infinite cardinality, but infinity isn't a set.

It seems as though you've failed to properly read the topic post.

So according to your own words, everybody should just be forced to suffer for the sake of somebody else? What do you think people do when they don't commit suicide? Usually they'll cut or perform other methods of self harm. You make it sound as if they're blatantly ignoring the fact that they can get help. If they wanted help, they would get it. So that must mean that they are obviously wanting to end their lives, so why force them to suffer and torture them even more just for your own happiness? That is the selfish part about this, people like you who think you're obligated to every single ******** luxury in the world, ******** everybody else's feelings, it's all about you and you only. If you seriously think people commit suicide just to purposefully upset your loved ones, then you are extremely sheltered and you have a very ignorant view on what suicide really is.

They are not ******** weak. It takes balls to pull that trigger, or tie that noose. There's a reason why there are so many attempted and failed suicides in the world.

And did you seriously just tell somebody who is suicidal to get over themselves? You are disgusting. Get the ******** out of my thread.

Xathari
What do they want them to do? Go on living a life that they hate and are miserable in to the point that they want to kill themselves, just so the people calling them "selfish" don't have to pretend to be sad for five minutes at a funeral? What a joke! neutral

Gross oversimplification of the issue.

First, implying that anyone who is suicidal will always be miserable.

Second, implying that anyone who doesn't want a loved one to kill him- or herself is only worried about pretending to be sad for the funeral.

Holy s**t, do you have any ******** clue what a successful suicide does to the surviving friends and family?
