well, though mine may be slower, I have one benefit all of you don't, mine is called Mobile Broadband, I have High Speed Internet almost everywhere I go, not just at home

Actually, I have a Verizon EVDO card for that.

I am one of the lucky few with netshare on my iPhone, so occasionally I use that. While AT&T's coverage is sparser, the HSDPA itself is faster when you can get a good signal, so I've done fairly well.

P.S. Responding to this with any kind of defense for your provider's coverage is basically redundant and also a slap in the face of your own thread.

@Alltel: Of all the people here, I think Kirin would be the only one who even needs that. And even then, I get the impression from his previous posts that he is bit of a coffee shop lurker when it comes to wireless anyway.

lol, what I have is far better than the wireless in coffee shops, but its good on trips, when your camping, and going to people's houses that don't have internet or dial-up
Why would you take your laptop camping? Why go camping at all?

well, at night, and I have to sometimes have it for work

I am, but honestly I way underuse my connection. I have the standard package, I don't pay extra. I am lucky to live in an area that gives me relatively good connections. I bet other people here would score much better on their speedtests if they were on 802.11n networks in the 5ghz band (so many people don't realize that 802.11b/g really can step on your bandwidth usage in practice, despite so called "peak numbers" wink .

It's still NOTHING compared to what even crappy access in Japan or Norway would be like.

@Alltel: You're a strange man. When I go camping, the only thing I take from civilization are a swag, a towel, sausages and alcohol. Laptops stay at home.

why would I do that Alltel and Verizon are merging, combining EVDO networks, and we have roaming agreement with Sprint, so really big EVDO Coverage now, AT&T's 3G, I cannot say anything about it being large

my idea of camping is a camper, electricity, Satellite TV, and I do agree on the alcohol, in all honesty, I could stay in a tent, but the wife would not like that too much

Maybe I should be ashamed to admit it, but I've taken a laptop camping. I actually took a 3 day retreat to the mountains to finish a personal project. I had a bunch of batteries and halfway through a friend came and swapped it for me.

I got a ton of work done. No one can interrupt you when your phone has 0 bars.

@Kirin: A billion dollar internet infrastructure project is being set up right now. Companies are bidding for the contract as we speak.

I hope you can convince your politicians to drop that firewall.

That's not camping! Hell, me and my mates rarely even take tents.

@Kirin: Tsk tsk. You're all technophiles. Also, firewall isn't even implemented yet! If at all. Civil liberties groups are going crazy over it.

one thing about Alltel, we are well know for rural coverage, I can go into the woods and mountains, of Arkansas camping, where very few people live, and still have service, but I see what your saying, sometimes its nice to have no service

You seriously have a problem. A real problem. A really real problem. You need to seek real help for your really real problem.

@DeadSeraphim Hey, what kind of bandwidth caps do you have these days? It used to be something absurd. I freaked the hell out of the hotel I stayed at.
