If the rumors that Steam will begin offer non game applications then it would appear Steam will almost be a full blown proprietary package manager.

I pay out the a** to be there, so I may as well adhere to their standards while I'm at it, seeing as almost all my homework is through some bullshit Pearson puts out that heavily relies on Direct X active x. (direct x? lolwtf?)

WINE I could potentially believe, some of that software relies on ActiveX and other crap technologies.

However "VMs are clunky and slow"? Is your computer more than 6 years old? I think the crapware your school makes you run is really the least of your problems. I doubt you could run a modern Linux distro on that PII you're lugging around.

Unless they have changed over the last year or so VM's still do not allow for hardware accelerated graphics last time I was using them. Making them slow in at least that regard. VM's can also be clunky (or make the main system clunky) if the main system only has enough ram for itself due to the fact you have to allocate all the ram you want the VM to have at the outset rather than having it request it as you go along.
