So I usually use Avidemux 2.6 to trim videos (mainly for making .gif). Lately, it's been crashing a lot. I thought about uninstalling it and then re-downloading it. But now I'm curious if there are similar programs to Avidemux that I could try out.

VirtualDubMod is a very good program for doing video editing, trimming, and reencoding, but can be somewhat difficult to use at first. As a note, afterdawn.com has lots of resources on video editing that can be helpful to you.
