So out of curiosity, is anyone else going to pick up a bulldozer proc at somepoint this year? Also in doing so are you going to be willing to upgrade to an AM3+ board to handle it? OPNIONS, I WANT THEM ALL! ninja
No, until they are able to be put neck and neck with intel's current gen there is no reason to pick one up. Simply put the phenoms are generally better than the bulldozer.
Huh, was not aware of this (been too lazy to look at bench tests and comparisons) I am running the phenom 2 X4 proc.

In fact, any single threaded tests performs worse on the bulldozer.

In game performance is also lower.

What this tells us is that for real world use, the phenom is still a better platform then bulldozer.

As for the i7 comparison: the bulldozer loses all but 5 tests.

Damn, your right sorry, Looked at wrong bar.
But the i7 I showed is almost 4x more expensive. (I used the highest high end of both spectrum)
But you are right the Phenom is $60 cheaper and is just as good (if not better).
But seeing the highest of the i7 compared to bulldozer (or phenom) I would take the cut on perfomance compared to price.

Of course single-threaded tests are worse on Bulldozer, Bulldozer is designed with a greater emphasis on multi-threaded applications. It's also generally not really reasonable to judge a new architecture on a first-generation chip; wait a few die shrinks and you'll get a better idea of how it performs (See Netburst for precedent). I don't know much about it but it also sounds like Windows 7 doesn't really know how to take advantage of the dual-module design which would of course affect performance.

I wouldn't buy Bulldozer today. I'd wait until Windows 7 & 8 receive patches to work with the new architecture and wait for the Piledriver revisions and see how that compares to Intel's latest silicon before I'd consider taking the plunge.
I like the debate going on so far ^.^ and also the information is nice to have too. I never buy the first round of anything any company puts out anyways as there is almost always some sort of issue. Most notable example to come to mind recently was ATI's first rollout with the higher end 5000 HD series cards. A large amount of those were DOA and had to be sent back (I was in that group, was too impatient to wait for next round of releases).

The real problem with this comparison is that Bulldozer isn't competing with the i7 990X, which is technically last generation hardware. Its real competition is Sandy Bridge and the 2500/2600. And the 2600 offers better single threaded performance than the 990X, balancing the difference in physical cores and maintaining a commanding lead over Bulldozer.

I too would rather buy in the $200-$300 price point than the +$1000 range, and that is where Sandy Bridge sits - right across the table from Bulldozer.
I like my FX-8120.
I don't plan on getting one, mainly because I just got a 2500k. But in all honesty, if I could have built a cheaper machine with the bulldozer processor I would have, because I haven't even hit 15% on my current processor. So I really don't need all that power.
I have an FX-8150 coming soon for a new computer build. I really believe that the reason the new bulldozers aren't performing as expected is because they aren't being scheduled correctly for tasks by the operating system. Even if this processor isn't all that it's cracked up to be, I'll have an AM3+ platform for when it comes time to upgrade to the new silicon!
I don't understand this. Why would you spend at least $50 more for at best equal performance even on highly threaded workloads? A Phenom 2 X4 980 is roughly the equivalent to the current BEST bulldozer chip (FX-8150), and it is much cheaper. They even have the same power draw.


So you say, "I'll be ready for the next gen of CPUs!". You can't really believe that will you? First off, your motherboard will require new microcode, which the manufacturer is not obliged to provide. Second off, AMD can decide the new generation needs a new socket and then you are SOL.

Lets give it the benefit of the doubt though. Suppose that AM3+ motherboard you bought has some killer feature the AM3 version did not. Ok, then why not still get the Phenom 2 X4 980 which is cheaper with roughly equal performance and use it on the AM3+ board? Nearly all AM3+ boards will run it.
Because I'm stubborn...and marginally insane?
