For the record, there's a few places that give iBooks to students. My friend's daughter got one, and they live on staten island (part of NYC).
But is that an entire county?

Wow... first of all, as someone who works for County government, I'd just like to applaud the people in your county for being ambitious enough to get something like this started.

But even if it does have it's rocky points, I think a project like this is a step in the right directon. Putting schools in a position to familiarize their students with computers will give them a HUGE advantage in the world of business. Their heart is in the right place, even if their hardware could use some upgrades. smile

3nodding There are advantages to distributing ibooks to students, and there are rocky points indeed.

Your frickin school district gives you a laptop? Seems cool...but what's the point, considering one could just stay in the computer labs for a while...I mean, if I were to have a laptop or notebook, I'd want it to be a bit more personalized. Then again, I'd get a bit nervous about bringing a laptop to my high school for the fact that many teachers would probably confiscate it, being overzealous on the electronics rule.

I mean, even some of my college instructors are a bit pernickity when it comes to that.

School labs? The county pretty much abolished school labs since the introduction of the ibooks. Half of the computers are still those slow and old ones. The only spare computers left are in the library. Unfortunately, we don't have that much customization option. Well, around here, just about everyone uses the ibook, so the teachers won't be going confiscating crazy. From what I've seen so far, teachers only confiscate it if they know you have porn on it (like you're looking at it in class?) or if you refuse to put it away when told to do so.

I'm assuming it has USB ports. If so, you can still hook up an external DVD drive or CD burner to it and get around that restriction.

I haven't thought about that actually... If it requires installation or setup of any kind, it won't work. You need administrators' username and password for that... which includes setting up your printer.

I'm betting they're firmware locked so they can't boot off liveCDs/other drives..

I recall seeing a screenshot off one of these ages ago.. are they STILL using OS 9 on the ibooks? That'd SUCK!

It was OS9 when it was introduced, but they've upgraded it. So far, the ibook has been upgraded every time before the start of the school year. We're using OSX.

Yeah, I just remembered Cumberland County gives its students ibooks as well. So it really has been people not catching up on the news. sweatdrop
Anonter person from Henrico County?

HELLO!

I'm from Tucker! How ya' doing?

Yes, the iBooks suck because of all the restrictions, but I still love Macs....
We're getting Dell Inspirons next year, but I really could care less because they'll have so many damn restrictions and bullshit policies in them, it wouldn't be worth it to me.

And because the county is too cheap to give its students with a last name from A to Q a G4. Yesterday marked the second week that my ibook is at the helpdesk (shipped at somewhere).

What sucks is that we'll be taking the SOLs (Standards of Learning tests) on the ibook. I don't have problems with taking it for English or world history (or whatever social study classes you take), but for math and science, it has to be on paper.

P.S. I'm from Hermitage... but might have to go to Tucker next year...

The thing about the Compaqs in the information technology hall is that there are almost more than three ways to do anything. Unfortunately for them, they haven't found a way to block the numerous ways to change our wallpapers. rolleyes Oh no!
Heh. It may be a good program, but it's really restricting, you're basically giving the kids a movable typewriter. When people get excessive in guarding the computer, some guy out there, will make something to blow their security away. And as for the county/school paying for them, in turn, you are actually paying for them with your taxes.

And another $50 for the insurance. biggrin

Speaking of blow their security away, last year, just about everyone knows how to take off the blocks, and it involves constantly restarting your computer. This year, I haven't heard of anyone able to take off the blocks without the administrator codes. Looks like they're getting smarter. domokun
Heh. Well, if I had time to tinker with it, I'd probably figure out how to get by it. But alas, I live in Florida, and my school is dirt cheap. sweatdrop
The next time you hear of a 0-day root-exploit for your MacOS you know what to do =)

Be glad it doesn't even compare to the thousands of windows exploits out there blaugh

Let me clarify that IN ORDER FOR AN EXPLOIT TO WORK YOU HAVE TO HAVE SERVICES RUNNING THAT ARE OFF BY DEFAULT! How are you going to exploit a machine when you have no way to get in in the first place?!
It's nice but probably just a huge marketing tool for apple =\

I'm not interested in taking the blocks off my computer anyways. A convenience of my home computer = great
