I think it's complete and udder bullcrap. Everyone is hosting something illegal. They can't search every single file in hopes of finding material to delete. That would waste a ton of time and money.
You couldn't go on a lot of these sites and search for files you wanted, there had to be a direct link that had to basically be given to you.
In my opinion, none of these sites did anything wrong. The people that posted stuff did.

When the people posting illegal stuff include the very people supposed to be removing the content questions start to get asked, for good reason.
It would be a waste of time to look through everything, that's why the government is erasing everything on the megaupload servers (or that's what I heard from yahoo news)

I think the cause of the problem is the affiliate program which rewards people who post popular stuff (which is usually pirated). Almost all the file host websites I've seen are restricted or they don't do business in the US anymore. The 2 file host websites that still seem decent are rapidshare and hotfile (both of which got into trouble before when they got to popular).

No, what's happening is that the hosting service shut down Megaupload, and then scheduled it for deletion. The government never did anything.

The EFF has been working with the hosting service and the Courts to try to release the files to the people they belong to.
