Question about Web Design.

At the moment, I'm not sure what to do with my life. I don't know what I want to major in or anything. I'm already at my third year in college and I've just been taking random courses. I was thinking about trying courses of different things to see what I like. One of them is web design. When I was younger, I used to make small, free web pages using those web builders, and I would use a very small bit of HTML.

Anyway, I'm just interested in the HTML part of web design. And maybe CSS, or whatever else is used. I'm not interested in the graphical/design aspect of web design. I just don't think I'm creative enough. I don't want to handle the graphics and make layouts and things like that. I just want to focus on the HTML, etc. The scripting side, I guess it would be called?

So what my question is, is it possible to get a job in web design with just HTML? Do web designers have to do both, or are there HTML/scripting-only web design jobs out there?

They're pretty well inseparable. You can't really get anything done unless you know both well.

You'll find it very unrewarding. Most jobs that involve that kind of work are the graphic design-focused nature.

Web designers generally are a graphically-oriented lot - they create visual designs and compose them with HTML and CSS. They know HTML and CSS, but only because they need to to do their jobs. They even learn a bit of JavaScript, since so much of modern designs (the so-called "Web 2.0") depend on it.

If you just want to do HTML, you'll find it uninteresting, unrewarding, and boring, especially if you don't like design and more especially when you get good at it.

If you want to do web development, you'll probably find it more interesting and rewarding. You'll need to learn at the very least JavaScript and a server-side technology (like ASP.NET, PHP, Python, Ruby, or any of dozens of other things) and you'll need to become familiar with all kinds of web technologies (like HTML5's new features and HTTP and so on). It pays just as well, too.

Most HTML only jobs I've seen are at apprenticeship level, which in this country means that you can get paid £2.50 per hour instead of the national minimum wage of roughly £5. I know minimum wage has changed recently for the UK but I haven't checked it yet.

If you're going to be a web coder I also suggest the following:

CSS
Javscript
XML
AJAX
Knowledge of setting up with Apache
Java (they can make very functional web applets and not to be confused with Javascript)
Possibly the C# and other .net programs if you're going to specialise with Windows web servers.

Everything you do to create a website except for the design.

So get some practice. Make some designs. Don't like them? Try again. Look at other designs for ideas. Try again. Make more designs. Show them to people.
