So I have an iMac 27", that I got around 2010/2011 while I was still in school and it's been working great up until about a month or so ago when it stopped reading CD's and DVD's. It had been working fine for it's entire lifespan, so why would it suddenly stop working altogether like that?

I put the disc in, it chugs and chugs along for about 10 seconds, and then spits it out. Anyone have any ideas?

It's not in the burning of DVD's, it's in the WATCHING of them.

This can happen if the lens on the laser is out of focus or dirty. It can also happen when the laser is beginning to fail (they really don't last as long as you'd think).

If you've got AppleCare, send it to them. They'll replace the drive, good as new.

You could try cleaning it with a drive cleaning disk, but I really don't know what that would do to a slot-loader. They are pretty rough on drives.
