My friend and I were talking on the phone, and we started to discuss about laws of the Internet. We were saying how countries have lots of rules, but the Internet does not have as much. Heck, even trolling is allowed. Are there any major illegal things about the Internet that you can think of? MY friend mentioned a couple.

The internet is not controlled by any one agency. "Laws of the Internet" are really more like "Laws of the country you live in." Illegal to pirate in your country? Don't. Illegal to have a Facebook in your country? Don't. etc. etc.

But it's far easier to prosecute people for harassment when they do it in person rather than remotely.

Good trolling wouldn't ever really reach the harassment threshold.

It really depends more on the person being trolled.

There is actually a codified etiquette system for the internet called "Netiquette".

http://www.albion.com/netiquette/corerules.html
A very good guide with elaboration should you want it.

Let's not forget that MMOs also have a specific subset of Netiquette. Mostly covering behaviours that only occur there like begging for in game currency (please don't do it you're just going to annoy people), but the general Netiquette still applies.

It is in some areas, somewhat also depending on what you're actually saying. It'll often fall under the purview of libel, slander, fraud, and a few other areas of Law.

I recall somebody who got incarcerated for trolling on facebook.

I recall somebody who got incarcerated for trolling on facebook.
That would probably be Lori Drew. Still ongoing.

Nope that is not it, I think it was just slander regarding a wedding.

There are no laws on the internet per say. It all varies depending on where you live. Here in Canada, there are no laws to pirate music - yet. Even then, most websites are USA-based, so if you're outside of the US, chances are that you're safe. Even in the US you're pretty safe. Companies don't often target single pirates, but rather companies or bigger organizations. Trolling isn't necessarily harassment since it's not physical. Besides, so many teenagers nowadays barely understand the true concept of trolling (which saddens me.)

Anywho, the laws depend on where you live - is what i'm trying to say. So search it up.

This isn't true; violation of DMCA and EUCD are both well encompassing antipiracy papers (one is an act and the other a directive) and the the provinces in Canada have been in a tizzy over C-11 (The Copyright Modernization Act).

Canada doesn't have unhindered access to unlawful material, and I can promise you the ISPs (at least Bell Canada does constantly) are keeping logs for when you all do have antipiracy measures placed in legislature.

Hm, thanks for updating me. Unfortunate how Bell is taking no action against me regardless. Or any of the hundreds of thousands of other people who pirate.
