Information for Setting up a LAN

I've been tasked with doing various tasks involved in setting up a LAN for one of my classes. However, the set up is sort of learn-it-yourself style and I've managed to waste a fair bit of time because I get the sense that I'm missing a larger perspective in this whole setup.

So, I was wondering if anyone knew of any online resources I could tap to try and gain a proper perspective on what to do.

A LAN is just a group of inter-connected devices. The internet is just a LAN on a large scale.

I'm not sure what you're looking for exactly. What hardware do you have to work with? Precisely what is your end goal?
