"Hacker" has a wide array of definitions, one of which would make me a hacker for modifying my toaster ]:

No, one of which would make you a hacker for modifying your toaster :]

srsly though, hacker is a term of respect that you cannot apply to yourself, and shouldn't be applied to crackers and skiddies.
Rite. Though, all of the terminology in the end depends on who is claiming it. MINDFAWK.

Actually Azkay, you modifying your toster does not make you a Hacker, (Even then if it did, same rule of thumb applies. You MODIFIED the ITEM without permission) If makes you a BONAFIED MODDER!

and I DEFIANTLY DO know what I am talking about because I DO PARTAKE in this type of stuff.
You are Arguing with a person who has been into computer technology, modifications and programming since he was FOUR.

You moddified your toaster, whoopdedoo. You are a MODDER., not a hacker. So before you talk, learn about whats the difference between things.

Now if you will excuse me I have work in twenty minutes~ Go ahead an rant more and I'll have fun messing around here latter.

Right... And you're now how old? 13? That's like nine whole years. Congrats! *pats you on the head*

Most of the regulars in C&T/TT have been technology enthusiasts since we were in the single-digits and many of us are now professionals in multiple fields including Information Security.

Since many of the regulars here are real hackers (or at least familiar with the terminology within the hacker community) we don't take very kindly to people insinuating that we're criminals because of our title. The term "hacker" has, since it's inception in the 1960s, been a term of endearment amongst programmers and engineers. It wasn't until the 1990s that the media began misusing the term and it became a colloquial epithet.

Unless you were born in the mid '90s you should know better than use the term "hacker" to refer to criminals when in the company of security professionals and programmers. Even then, if you're going to make claims of higher knowledge you should know the history behind the terminology and who you're talking to before you go shooting your mouth off.

(This has some interesting parallels to the "******" vs. "niggah" argument, except that "hacker" was originally an endearment that was turned into an epithet and not the other way around.)

modding fits within the definition of hacking, but it's still hacking, not long ago, some douche started calling crackers hackers, now all the idiots think hacking is bad, like you.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hacker there's a definition for hacker, and the modder community is listed in the hobbyist subclass. i encourage everyone to load up with ammo from these pages, and the ones linked from them, so that little twits that can't look up a definition before fudding all over, can be put in their place properly.

And no matter how hard we try to educate people, the universe will always build a better idiot to thwart us.

I feel your pain.

Albert Einstein once said this:
"Two things are infinite: the universe and human stupidity; and I'm not sure about the the universe."

Educate yourselves.
they get paid. moar than they would selling antivirus.
IAY
why do those damn hackers do something with there there skill like make good protection for computers and get paid like god damn it

When I think of the question I think of two kinds of hackers

The stupid ones that think they are cool by stealing people stuff online because they know a few letters that can affect a system.

and,

The smart ones that actually use the hacking skill in govermental work. These guys are the ones that hack into lets say...files that belong to a terrorist.

Most of us "internet peoplez think of the first one because we play online games on the computer and hackers tend to appear in video games to ruin everyone elses fun and gain benifits for themselves. evil These are the hackers I hate and wish they are in prison forever.

The goverment hackers I respect because use it for a good cause.

Its like a yin-yang moment if you kinda think about it wink
