History

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.First discovered in Gaia around the winter of 2003, the zurui were brought into the spotlight by a fox demon named Youkochylde. His efforts to gather Gaian sympathy and understanding for the clever zurui paid off, and before long, many Gaians had found a place in their home for one, or more, of the animals. Their company was enjoyed for quite some time before Youkochylde found himself unable to continue his efforts. After careful consideration, he handed over care of the zurui to an angel named Shinobu, who also worked to find homes for the furry creatures. When the angel also found himself being called away, the shop passed to the hands of a young human woman named Trio, who did her best to renew Gaian interest in the zurui. For a time, it worked well.

Unfortunately, no one quite knows what has become of Trio. The shop where she guided adoptions lies abandoned, dust clouding the surfaces, and the zurui themselves have all moved on, wandering out into the wilds to care for themselves, or staying close to their guardians, if they were fortunate enough to be adopted before Trio's disappearance. It continued this way for quite some time, long enough for the zurui to figure out that things had changed for them... drastically.

Fortunately for the continued survival of the species, a life zurui named Aliikki stumbled across two things of great interest to her. The first was a necklace of beads, and while zurui are not known for their accessorizing, she couldn't quite resist the urge to slip them over her neck very briefly. The result staggered her, for she found her very body stretching and shifting to resemble a slender, furred humanoid. Understandably alarmed, she ripped the beads back off, and found herself reverting to her previous, fox-like form. Once she'd done some experimentation, she decided that the beads could prove useful, and brought them with her. The second thing she discovered was a tiny little catlike creature bathing in a birdbath. Aliikki's affinity for the element of life drew her to the kit, and all too quickly she discovered that she was responsible for its care. The two bonded, and eventually, Aliikki determined that similar bonds between Gaians and the zurui or the huliao could only benefit the races. Gathering those few of her people in the wild, she explained her findings to them, demonstrating the beads and showing them the little huliao kit. While none of them were willing to attempt a bonding, they were willing to give over some of their offspring in order to help protect the species.

Physiology

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show. The zurui, shown in the example to the left, is a smallish creature not too much bigger than a normal fox. While males are a slight touch larger, the difference is almost imperceptible, even among their own. They are slender creatures more suited to speed and agility than brute strength, and they have wickedly sharp teeth, but know how to soften their bite so that they can pick up kits without hurting them.

Zurui differ vastly in coloration, and surprisingly, the elemental affinity each zurui shares with a particular element only slightly influences their coloration. Coloration and patterning over the fur, like the count of their tails, is often passed on genetically to any children they might have.

Zurui are both nocturnal and diurnal, their active time depending mostly on the bond they live with, or the area they live in. They are mostly carnivorous, though certainly intelligent enough to avoid any creature that is bonded to a Gaian, or is likewise intelligent. Their prey tends to be creatures smaller than themselves - dumb animals considered pests in whatever area they're in.

Temperament

While the zurui's colors are not dictated by their elemental affinity, their personality seems to be far more influenced by it. Although one might certainly see a nurturing death zurui, or a cruelly vicious life zurui, those would be considered abnormalities, and possibly even mutations. The bulk of the zurui are at least similar in nature to the personality laid out by the elemental information here.

Young

Zurui are, generally, a nurturing lot who care for their young and teach them. The young themselves are energetic, quick learning, and fast, picking up and utilizing necessary skills almost immediately. They tend to inherit both coloration and patterning from their parents, but the most common zurui - those whose affinities are to air, earth, fire, water, and energy - almost never show their patterning before they reach adulthood. The less common zurui, however - those whose affinities are to dark, light, death, and life - have patterning displayed nearly from birth. Kits are much smaller than adults, and most love contact and touch.

Breeding

Little is known about zurui breeding in the wild, but in captivity, we discover that bonds with Gaians result in sterility among all zurui. This unfortunate change in chemistry can be altered with fertility potions, which can be purchased in the store. Each potion guarantees two kits, and the zurui themselves will settle in to be good parents or offer their kits up for further adoption. It is speculated that those zurui who are bred in captivity but then introduced back into the wild regain the ability to have kits naturally, thus ensuring the species' survival.

For those wishing to breed their zurui, arrangements can be made via the guild.

History

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show. The huliao were initially brought to Gaian attention around 2005 by a woman named Trio Maxwell-Chang, who found one in her birdbath. After determining that something in the paint on the birdbath drew this huliao to her home, Trio adopted the huliao. An enterprising young woman, Trio immediately saw an opportunity, and began reproducing the effect with other birdbaths and paint, drawing more of the kittens out of the wild and into the homes of Gaians everywhere. Unfortunately, Trio's disappearance ended that, leaving the huliao to remain in the wild. However, a few that were in contact with her, but unbonded, returned to the wild, finding themselves unable to settle there. Uncomfortable and unable to pinpoint the cause, they did their best to return to life in the wild. Offspring they had were weak, and those few who did survive were sterile. It was one of these offspring that Aliikki discovered.

Eventually, the huliao banded together with the zurui to try to return order to their people. They raided the shop that Trio left behind, discovering the formula for the paint, and Aliikki found a suitable human to take over the task of guiding those huliao who wanted domesticity to loving homes.

Little else is known about huliao in the wild, save that they are a secretive species. Perhaps eventually, we will know more.

Physiology

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show. Looking a bit like an odd cross between a housecat and a goat, the huliao sport silky fur, strong horns, and partially hooved paws. They are roughly the size of a large domestic cat, with males being visibly larger than females, and their horns do not fully grow in until they are adults. Males have an extra plate of skull under their horns, and a spine that has evolved to withstand impact, for in the wild, males will fight for females by ramming horns together until one gives up... or dies. They walk with a delicate step, and have a shocking ability to balance, enabling them to get into and out of incredibly difficult areas. And like zurui, huliao are intelligent and able to speak, thus ensuring that their bond with other creatures is not misunderstood.

For some unknown reason, huliao in the wild are drawn to birdbaths, but only those birdbaths painted to look like them. No one knows quite where this behavior originated, but birdbaths treated with a special paint are known to draw huliao to them 100% of the time.

Huliao's coloration varies greatly, with coloration and patterning passed down to offspring. However, elemental affinity has very little to do with the coloration of a huliao, leading to some amusing misunderstandings amongst those who don't quite understand that they do not look for colors to pinpoint affinity.

Huliao are diurnal, preferring to be out in sunlight whenever possible. Though they look much like cats, huliao are herbivorous. Their preferred diet is grass and small shoots, though in lean times, they can eat even the toughest of plants.

Temperament

Like zurui, the personality of a huliao seems influenced by their elemental affinity. There can certainly be abnormalities and mutations, but by and large, looking at the affinity will give you a good hint to their true nature. The bulk of the zurui are at least similar in nature to the personality laid out by the elemental information here.

Young

Huliao start life more or less ready to subsist on their own. Their first week of life, the mother will spend herding her kittens around to various places and ensuring they learn. But after a week, they are sent off on their own, and learn further at their own pace, or die trying. Huliao intelligence ensures that they learn very quickly, however. It is rare that one does not figure out how to continue on without its parents.

This is not to imply that huliao have no interest in familial ties or loyalty, or that they are particularly solitary. Huliao can be very social creatures who value and reward loyalty. However, their socializing tends to come with those who did not birth them.

Breeding

Huliao in the wild are attracted, as young kits freshly free of their parents, to painted birdbaths. But those bred in captivity seem to have little interest in birdbaths. Like the zurui, they appear sterile once bonded with a Gaian, but this problem has been fixed with the introduction of the fertility potion for huliao, which can be purchased in the store. Each potion guarantees two kittens, and the mother will do her standard week-long teaching spree before handing her kit over to another bond. It is speculated that those huliao who are bred in captivity but then introduced back into the wild regain their ability to have kittens naturally, thus ensuring the species' survival.

For those wishing to breed their huliao, arrangements can be made via the guild.

History

Sweetbirds, as these creatures are called, are a shy, secretive lot. No one knows quite when they showed up in Gaia, but since the bond between Ruokei and Sailien, a few have started showing up around the Those Who Remained shop. Aliikki, in an attempt to encourage them to stay, has mixed up a batch of sugarwater and put it in a hummingbird feeder. Perhaps if they look like hummingbirds, they might eat like hummingbirds do.

Physiology

Sweetbirds are smaller in size than a hummingbird, though not by much, and have very few natural predators. Predatory birds and animals find sweetbird meat tastes foul, and they emit a low-level sense of danger when approached, making the predators feel as though eating them could prove deadly. Sweetbirds are mildly empathic, but it is a very instinctual, uncontrolled empathy, and the low-levels they project are easily blocked by someone with a higher skill in empathy. Sweetbirds communicate mainly through telepathy, which they are quite skilled at. Their telepathy allows them to speak any language, even mechanical, without need of an interpreter or study, and a bonded sweetbird can project into their bond's mind, regardless of how telepathically headblind the bond is.

Sweetbirds have been known to bond with any creature, and once bonded, they remain so bonded for life, often dying when their bond dies. Thus far, it has proven impossible to break this bond. Sweetbird bonding is a conscious thing, chosen by a sweetbird based on some action or actions by the hopeful-bond. Some sweetbirds like gifts of glittery items and gems. Others like food, though they never seem to eat enough to sustain their energetic flight. Others still like songs or dances. And on the list goes. It is impossible to know beforehand what will draw a sweetbird to you.* While sweetbirds are birds, their natural connection to the air does not prohibit them from bonding with an earth-aligned creature.

Temperament

Sweetbirds tend to be quick of thought and emotion, flitting from one to the next with a speed that would seem dizzying to humans. However, these quickchanges are muted somewhat once they are bonded, and they tend to draw on their bond's temperament to an extent, allowing them to better fit with their bond. They are quite intelligent, however, and even when bonded, do not feel that they are chained to their bond. Indeed, they have a touch of the wanderlust, and this may just give the bonded an excuse to travel with them.

Breeding and Young

No one knows quite what happens with a sweetbird breeding. In fact, tracking such a thing has proven nearly impossible. Indeed, the few times a sweetbird has seemed to take another mate, they have disappeared for a time, only to return without young. And on their return, as often as not, observers find that the two sweetbirds, who before had hovered over each other possessively, now seem to have moved on from this phase. A few do seem to retain their 'mated' status, but this is not, by any means, the most common result.

It might still be concluded that the sweetbirds have gone off to procreate, as when such disappearances happen, some time later new sweetbirds will show up, with a similar color mixture as the two adults. But then again, sweetbirds are a very colorful lot, and so this may just be pure coincidence.

No one yet knows....**

Obtaining a Sweetbird

Huliao and Zurui certainly seem to have the easiest time drawing sweetbirds to them, but anyone can obtain a sweetbird. Gaia does, however, require that all bonded sweetbirds be registered through Those Who Remained. To draw a sweetbird to you, follow the steps below:

Step 1 - Sweetbird Sighting
Watch for a sweetbird to show up around the shop. (These sweetbirds will have examples posted periodically in the main shop thread, an open roleplay thread within the guild, or even, sometimes, a journal thread where Mireille has permission to post.)

Step 2 - Attracting the Sweetbird
Once you have seen a sweetbird, it is time to compete for its attention. Find some action or item to offer that may tempt the sweetbird to you. (Main shop birds are free-for-alls, and do not require a donation to the shop itself. If you wish to offer the sweetbird a shiny item, simply post a picture of the item you wish to offer, or post a roleplay post about what you offer or what you do. Open RP thread birds are available to anyone willing to actually join in the roleplay thread in question, and if others disrupt the action too much, Mir will stop offering them this way. Journal birds are solely for the journal owner, and will rarely be seen. All birds require interaction before they become 'yours'. If ignored, the bird will fly away unbonded.)

Step 3 - Registering the Bond
If the sweetbird has chosen to bond to you, it's time to get the bond registered. An unregistered bond is illegal within Gaia, and the bird will not be allowed to stay with you if the bond is not registered. To register the bond, provide Mireille Lemieux with the following information: The bird's name, the bond's name, and the bird's gender. Once that information is done, send a trade for 1,000g (1k)*** to Mireille Lemieux, and she will process your paperwork to provide you with the needed documentation. (If the sweetbird is bonded to a zurui or huliao, it still requires its own cert, but may also be added to the zurui or huliao's cert free of charge.)

* - I will have a thread set up in the Staff section of the guild where I will randomize what will draw a sweetbird before I post it in any free-for-all setting. This should prevent me from playing favorites even subconsciously. Sweetbirds are a reward for roleplaying, but roleplay to attract a sweetbird does not need to be epically crafted. This is all meant as fun. Journal sweetbirds do not have randomization, as journal owners have already attracted the sweetbird's attention.

** - Currently, I don't offer sweetbird breeding, and have no egg or "baby" stages. I may, in the future, allow breeding where sweetbirds fly off together and eventually fully-grown offspring shows up, but there are no plans for that at this time.

*** - Registration for sweetbirds who've been drawn to journals will be taken care of through TWR's petty cash fund. (Journal-reward sweetbirds are free for the journal's owner).

5,000g
With Inari's departure, zurui who have formed bonds with other creatures such as humans find themselves sterile. However, when this potion is consumed, it works with the zurui's natural hormones and body chemistry to allow the zurui to breed. Unfortunately, the potion is so very strong that taking more than one potion per zurui in a breeding has the chance to permanently damage zurui kits, keeping them from ever growing to adult, even by magic means. Therefore, per breeding, there is a limit of one potion per zurui. (This means that there can be up to 2 potions consumed in a zurui breeding.) Each potion, when taken correctly, guarantees the arrival of two kits. (Thus, there is a minimum of two kits, and a maximum of four kits, to a breeding.) Breedings where no potion has been consumed will, unfortunately, result in no kits at all.
In Stock:Unlimited but purchaseable only by those who have a pet in a den

8,000g
Thanks to their closenes to the zurui, huliao who have formed bonds with other creatures such as humans also find themselves sterile. However, when this potion is consumed, it works with the huliao's natural hormones and body chemistry to allow the huliao to breed. Unfortunately, the potion is so very strong that taking more than one potion per huliao in a breeding has the chance to permanently damage huliao kits, keeping them from ever growing to adult, even by magic means. Therefore, per breeding, there is a limit of one potion per huliao. (This means that there can be up to 2 potions consumed in a huliao breeding.) Each potion, when taken correctly, guarantees the arrival of two kits. (Thus, there is a minimum of two kits, and a maximum of four kits, to a breeding.) Breedings where no potion has been consumed will, unfortunately, result in no kits at all.

100g
In some cases, zurui and huliao have found their mates from among the same gender as themselves, but still want to have children. Fortunately, a single berry from this unusual Gaian plant will allow these creatures to change gender for a short period of time. Applicable only when ready to breed, one zurui or huliao of the pair must take this berry prior to breeding, which will allow them to breed naturally. Alternative to the berry, such a pair may find a surrogate parent to help them breed kits.

500g
Amazingly, some zurui or huliao find that opposites do, indeed, attract. They've found their mates of an element completely opposite to their own. As a result, they cannot have kits. This berry will do for element what the genderswitch berry does for gender. It is a short term change in element only, and only really applicable for breeding. Unfortunately, while the genderswitch plant is only unusual, the typeswitch plant is extremely rare, and thus difficult to keep in stock in the shop.

1,000g
This pretty little bead carries the power to permanently change your zurui or huliao's type and element, but it is a random new type and element that your pet will receive. The power of this bead takes time to merge with your pet. Inari's Memories are very rare and very surprising to come across.

Free
Those who have purchased Inari's Memory may not be content with a wholly-random elemental change. In order to pray to avoid a particular element (perhaps the opposing element of your mate), the owner must take the appropriately colored charm and display it prominently somewhere for a time. Recommended display places are signatures, journals, profiles, or personally-owned threads. If Mireille can see a Prayer to Inari in one of those places, then your zurui stands a good chance of not ending up with that particular element. Sadly, using more than one Prayer per Memory results in an elemental clash that could render Inari's Memory powerless.

12,000g (6,000g per pearl) + Quest
The Harmony Pearl is the only item in existence known to allow opposing elements to mingle without weakening each other. Zurui and huliao of opposing elements may not only be immune to each others' elements, but may also find themselves strengthened by the presence of their mate, if their mate is of an opposed element to themselves. Furthermore, this small bead will permanently allow breeding for zurui or huliao of opposed elements... but the zurui and huliao must be lifemated to each other, and are required to both have a pearl to breed safely. The price of harmony pearls is 12,000g, which pays for 2 pearls, and a quest to be given by the shopowner. The quest will differ from pair to pair, and will involve roleplaying to complete. Once the trade is finalized and the quest completed, the pets in question will have their certs updated with an image of the pearls, and the owner's list updated with a notation of their lifemating. This pearl is not something to be purchased lightly.

1,500g
This dye creates a new pattern in an existing pet's coat. The purchaser of the dye may specify what color they would like for the new pattern, but may not specify the pattern. The dye can take up to two weeks to fully manifest. This dye, sadly, will not work on generation 00 zurui and huliao - the pets from before Inari left. Thus, only pets from this particular shop are eligible to use the fur dye.

75,000g
These beads radiate a magic that is only useable on zurui. When the zurui dons the beads, he or she will be shifted to a humanoid form, while still retaining their zurui features. Removing the beads will revert them back. These necklaces are rare items only occasionally in stock, and can take up to two weeks to attune themselves to a particular zurui. Until attuned, they will not work at all, and once purchased, they are not tradeable between zurui. The necklaces, sadly, do not work on huliao at all, nor do they work on generation 00 zurui. It would seem their magic only works on zurui who came into being after Inari left. Those with zurui kits may purchase this necklace, but sadly, the magic will not take full effect until the zurui reaches an adult.

75,000g
Not content to allow their allies to remain so limited, Aliikki began to work on a carefully woven band of imbued magical fibers. Unbeknownst to her, Nightshade also began to work on a band of his own devising, for his own reasons. The end result worked better than either could have expected. The bracelets, given power from the life and death zurui, allow the huliao to shift into a humanoid form when worn. Removing the bracelet will revert the huliao back. These bracelets are rare things, taking up extensive amounts of energy from Aliikki and Nightshade (the only two zurui who know how to craft them). The bracelets, sadly, do not work on generation 00 huliao, or on zurui. Perhaps because Aliikki and Nightshade were governed by magic that is inaccessible to the huliao, they created magic that is inaccessible to the zurui. Those with birdbaths or huliao younger than adults may purchase this bracelet, but sadly, the magic will not take full effect until the huliao reaches an adult.

*I reserve the right to negotiate a higher fee for customs that I find complicated enough to make me cry.

Notes
▪ If customs are closed, I may be bribed for an open spot by doubling the price of the custom you want.
▪ Unimbued flutes are available for any custom except premades. Unimbued flutes may be traded at any time (with my agreement) for a custom spot, even if customs are closed. Flute customs will always cost normal custom prices.
▪ To obtain an unimbued flute, a quester must: have a quest thread posted which details their quest, have a link back to Those Who Remained in the quest thread, have put together at least 50% of the quest cost, and introduced themselves in Those Who Remained.
▪ Lineart edits are unavailable right now. Please do not ask about them.
▪ Gen 00 pets can be made into Gen 01 pets with the appropriate custom spot. Each pet will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis, and I will refuse if I do not believe I can do the coloring justice.
▪ Pet trade requests are always welcome, but I look very carefully at each shop before I say yes. Some shops, I simply do not feel capable of following their requirements, or just do not care for the pet. Please do not be intimidated, though. I very much like breedables and looking at new shops.
▪ Pet trade requests may be made with a single post in the shop thread that includes a link to the shop in question. Multiple posts with a shop link are unnecessary and inappropriate.
▪ Payment plans may be arranged for any growing custom. Non-growing customs are not eligible for payment plans. The pet will not grow to adult until the cost of the custom is paid in full.

Those who have donated money or items to Mireille by way of this shop will be remembered in this post. Each month, any donators from that month will be entered into a special raffle for a random, non-growing adult zurui or huliao (chosen by myself), and the winner will be announced in the thread.

Those months where there are no donations, the pets will be taken and put aside for future flatsales and games.

If you'd like to be an affiliate with TWR, please come in and get to know us first. I don't mind a single link posted along with an affiliate request, but I'm getting pretty tired of seeing a person pop in, ask for an affiliate, and then never come in again. Affiliates are not automatically approved unless I know the shop and know that it is the right atmosphere for my regulars. And part of knowing that means knowing the people who run it. So please - stop in. Get to know us some. Let us get to know you. It'll go a long way towards me deciding that an affiliation is a good idea. 3nodding

The Zurui Nojo started with the original artist, Youkochylde. When he moved on, he handed the shop over to Shinobu Angel, and from there, the shop was passed down to me. I never could let the Zurui die, because they were the breedables that drew me to Gaia years ago, and even now, I love them very much. However, following in the footsteps of Youkochylde and Shinobu Angel, the time has come for me to hand this shop over to a new owner. She has some interesting ideas of directions to take the Nojo in, and I hope that she will have an exciting time of it.

The Huliao first showed up in Gaia as commissioned lineart for an old shop of mine, Chime Spirits. Mireille has expressed interest in combining the two, so I've handed them over to her as well.

May this shop have a long and happy stay in Gaia, and may it be blessed with owners as wonderful as were around when I was the owner.
