The Story Of Halloween Town (Also read: The Little Scareling Primer)

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

Hundreds of years ago, a creature called Jack Skellington presided over Halloween Town, ruling as the Pumpkin King. This is not his story, but it is his world.

As years passed, Halloween Town's successes and failures garnered attention, both good and bad. The population was growing, and the town soon found itself with more monsters, ghosts, and other creepy-crawlies than it knew what to do with. In order to accommodate the constant influx of new creatures, the borders of the town slowly started to edge their way outward. Before long, Halloween Town was no longer a town but a city; no longer a city but a state; no longer a state but a country. Instead of remaining the tight-knit group it had always been before, it was suddenly an entire world unto itself.

It was wonderful and it was awful. As large as their new world was, the people of Halloween found themselves at odds with each other, bored and restless. In a land full of strange creatures, it was difficult to be especially strange, to set oneself apart from the crowd. In order to do this, the inhabitants of Halloween started venturing out into the fleshy world more often, to toy with humans and distinguish themselves by gathering exorbitant amounts of FEAR.

But even here there were problems. Two ghosts found themselves fighting for the same terrified child, huddled under its covers, and the ensuing mix-up would leave the girl laughing instead of weeping. A monster would step into its ancestral closet only to find a smelly creature already squatting in its most comfortable seat in the corner. A demon would lay a clever plan to trap a human's soul through a nefarious deal, and another would come in and cancel out all the hard work that he'd done.

It was time for regulation. As much as the people of Halloween hated rules and orders, they realized the importance of organization. Laws were instituted: no traveling to the Human World without a passport, to limit the numbers out and about at any given time, so that everyone could have a chance to scare. In order to get that passport, knowledge was needed. Knowledge that could be acquired only from schools.

And one school above all the rest...

        Amityville Academy.

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

Yet as the creatures of Halloween grew in power and influence, strengthened by their newfound unity, they found themselves attracting unwanted attention. Humans had spent centuries being victimized for Halloween's benefit - could anyone blame them for defending themselves and fighting back?

Isolating themselves on an island within the Bermuda Triangle, on the edges between the Human World and Halloween, the human Hunters of Deus Ex Machina came together with only one goal: to protect humanity by extinguishing the darkness of FEAR.

Working in concert with sentient weapons, former monsters transformed into (mostly) willing partners, the Hunters have given up ordinary human lives in order to defend the Human World from those who would destroy it. For, while many creatures in Halloween are content simply to scare, not harm, there are those who view humans as mere cattle to be enslaved and destroyed...

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

The Horsemen of the Lost Clan, also known as the Horsemen of the Apocalypse, are such beings - created through human FEAR of the end of the world, their goal is to bring about that fabled event and rule over all humanity. Though the Hunters have recently struck terrible blows against the Four Clans, destroying their former home and reducing them to refugees within Halloween, the Horsemen are tenacious creatures.

Famine, War, Conquest, and Death: the former four clans make up the Lost Clan, four cultures forged to one new purpose by the Hunter's actions: revenge. Yet their desire for vengeance, and their brutal and cruel methods, sets them at odds with the very restraint and regulation that has made Halloween into a great power once more. Even within Halloween itself, not everyone is pleased with the Horsemen's chaotic plans...

The World of Halloween

Ages ago, the resident ghouls and monsters created their tiny and homely abode of Halloween Town. Nowadays, it has expanded, and Halloween Town's tiny overpopulated borders grew and grew, until the whole place was simply Halloween! 'Halloween Town' now refers only to the original little town, the place where Halloween began.

The World of Halloween covers a huge area, filled with every creepy landscape imaginable: craggy mountain ranges covered in snow, pitch-black cave systems, smelly swamps, arid deserts, rolling plains, raging seas. Since everything is made from FEAR, everything has a spooky edge to it: there aren't any beautiful meadows of wildflowers, but there sure are 'beautiful' meadows of deadly nightshade, carnivorous plants, and other splendid Halloween flora. If humans have ever been afraid of it, Halloween's got it! There are also many different towns, villages, and smaller communities all around Halloween.

Halloween Town is not the only town in Halloween - but it is where everything started! The town has a long and storied history, with many points of interest for residents and tourists alike. It is also the home of Amityville Academy and its many students... which is where our story begins.

Amityville Academy

Amityville Academy is the oldest and most prestigious of Halloween's schools. Generations of students have walked its halls, only to later become some of society's most prominent citizens. With a little time and effort, students here can not only acquire the knowledge and passports needed to enter the fleshy world, but can also become as FEAR-rich as the most famous of Halloween frightmasters.

Learning to Scare: Amityville's dedicated staff of professors work long hours (in theory) to bring out the best of the worst aspects of their student. With a wide variety of classes available, students will be able to create a curriculum custom-fit to their particular needs. The addition of student-run clubs encourages students to expand their horizons and develop relationships, making it easy to indulge in even the strangest of hobbies.

'Life' on Campus: Amityville students are assigned dorms according to their species, as to cater to their personal comforts. Each dorm is separated and contained in a unique environment, and kept to its own private area of the Academy, both to aid in concentration and to encourage rivalries.

Amityville Academy Staff

The professors and staff of Amityville Academy are the Ultimate Authorities when it comes to life within the Academy's walls. What they say goes, and it's best not to argue, because not only do they hold advancement in their hands, but they're also really scary. Well, most of them. They teach classes, will help organize clubs and student-run events, award helpful students, and will mete out punishment when if the time comes...

»Demons are Halloween's noble fiends. These prideful souls were considered the 'original' denizens of Halloween. They still consider themselves one step above and beyond the other factions, and enjoy flaunting their wealth and status as they pursue their great ambitions. Some may consider them stuck-up and pretentious.

»Ghosts are the souls of former humans, creatures, monsters, and just about anything that could call itself "alive" and had a soul. While they may seem shy and easily fade into the background, Ghosts have a cheery, welcoming culture and take care of their own. Beings such as elementals and spirits are also considered part of the Ghost faction.

»Reapers are the people of Halloween who look... well, very human! Lacking strange and monstrous bodies like many Halloween creatures, Reapers instead rely on magic, funneled through either their weapons or their familiars. Because of their human-like appearance, Reapers bear a heavy stigma in Halloween; however, they are exceptional at working 'under cover' in the Human World itself.

»Undead comprise any being that is technically not alive, yet not truly dead: they are capable of thought, motion, speech, and all those other lovely things, without any of that pesky breathing or heart-beating to get in the way. Undead are often viewed as stupid, slow, smelly creatures, and even the brightest, fastest, cleanest of undead have to deal with this pervading stereotype. Still, the great Pumpkin King Jack Skellington was undead, a point of great pride for all members of this faction.

»Monsters are the great catch-all faction of Halloween. From werewolves to tentacle beasts, any horrific being that doesn't fit into one of the other factions can find a home within monster-kind. Sheer variety, adaptability, and unpredictability are the greatest strengths of the monster faction. Monsters live loud and proud!

The Island

The largest portal between Halloween and the Human World lies right within what is commonly known to humans as "The Bermuda Triangle". Situated in the middle of "nowhere" lies an island covered entirely by fog, home to Deus Ex Machina, a facility dedicated to protecting the Human World from extinction.

The island itself isn't very remarkable. Other than self sustaining, the only notable thing punctuating the place is a dormant volcano, and a pure white building that looks more like a temple than anything else glistening off the refracted sunlight. Large buildings and smaller walkways run off from all sides of the courtyard, there seems to be a training facility in the further back.

Though the sun burns intensely in the sky, a strange miasma covers the entire area. The buildings look bleak at best, muffled, the grass more lukewarm mint than green. The entire island is not only surrounded but protected by the fog around it; the climate is colder, everything more bleak and distant than forgiving.

Deus Ex Machina

Purpose: Deus Ex Machina protects humanity from creatures of darkness that might harm or destroy them - such as, for example, the beings of Halloween. To that end, they recruit humans born with the innate ability to sense FEAR. They live secluded, intense, and often tragically short lives, separated from the rest of humanity by their duty and their bond to the darkness.

Weapons: All Hunters' powers are drawn from their weapons. A Hunter weapon is a sentient being, formerly Halloween creatures forged into the shape of various weapons through Hunter technology. The weapon protects the Hunter in battle, guiding and serving them as a lifelong partner. Hunters can speak telepathically to their weapon and their weapon alone.

Missions: All Deus Ex Machina Hunter trainees are required to partake in missions. They can either be solo or larger group dispatch missions, the latter usually only sent to apprehend unusual quantities of Fear in the Human World. Otherwise, newer Trainees missions are always set by their superiors, usually their faction leader, attendance to large mission assignment classes is mandatory for beginning Hunter trainees.

Dormitories: The Hunters of Deus Ex Machina have isolated themselves from humanity in order to protect their world. Thus, all Hunters live on the Island, in dormitories (or houses for higher ranked Hunters). The dorms are very small and "travel" sized. They only have room to accommodate the bare essentials, as most Hunter trainees are on the field engaged in missions instead of spending time lazing around in their dorms.

Deus Ex Machina Administration

Deus Ex Machina administration, also known as Division Leaders, are responsible for the activities of Hunters and trainees in their division, and even outside of it. They basically help govern and run the operations of Deus Ex Machina, including trainee recruiting and target elimination. Their overall goal is, of course, to protect the Human World from manifestations of FEAR.

Deux Ex Machina Divisions

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

Each Hunter is assigned to one of five divisions, with each division specializing in a particular skill set.

»Sun Division: Does 'hands on' operations, more tied to the offensive aspects of missions: attacking, assaulting, etc.

»Moon Division: Does 'hands on' operations, more tied to the defensive aspects of missions: repair, protection, guarding, etc.

»Mist Division: The group that does not have one specified role but fills in for everyone. A jack of all trades, master of none group, they are usually asked to take missions from all four categories. As a result, they do not get specialized field missions.

»Life Division: Related to research, including research of Halloween itself, Halloween creatures, FEAR, and the abilities of Fear and Hunters. They also study and develop Runic technology.

»Death Division: The 'intelligence' operation, in charge of gathering information and maintaining the network of Hunters. They gather information prior to a mission and often do 'spy' work.

The Horsemen of the Apocalypse

The Four Clans of Horsemen lived on the far reaches of Halloween, so far on the fringes that they could almost have been from another world entirely. Dwelling on the Four Isles, led by the Four Riders - Death, War, Conquest, and Famine - they plotted the foretold end of the Human World, awaiting the day when they would ride out and bring about the Apocalypse. To that end, their cultures used humans like cattle, tormenting them to wring out every bit of FEAR from their minds before killing them.

And then the Hunters came. Seeking to defend their world, the humans of Deus Ex Machina managed to destroy the Four Isles in a single cataclysmic event. In that moment, the Four Clans were lost: not just the Isles, but also ninety percent of the Horsemen population were utterly destroyed.

Due to this disastrous incident, the loss of their home and also of their separate Clan identities, the Four Clans survivors were renamed the Lost Clan. They keep this name to remember who they were... and that their former Clans do not matter as much as their ability to continue onwards and survive.

Lost Clan members are productive creatures, determined to flourish in the face of adversity. Each Clan member is assigned a role to ensure the survivability of their clan. Though all Clan members are representative of their original Clans (Famine, War, Death and Conquest), they now work amongst each other. This new unity is a group effort to re-cultivate what has been lost.

The Lost Clan

The Sanctuary: With their original homeland destroyed, the Horsemen have relocated to a remote area bridging the Human and Halloween world. This is an impossibly tall tower that scales to the sky. All eventually find themselves here, and all are given a purpose again.

Trance: Through the arts of the surviving High Priestess of Death, Medea, the Horsemen can practice the art of walking through memory. Known as Trance, this special ability is reserved for members of the Lost Clan alone... though sometimes Medea may choose to offer this gift to worthy Halloween residents on an as-needed basis.

Distortion & Initiation: The Horsemen bear a brand on their bodies indicating their devotion to their own kind and to their vengeance. This mysterious marking, and the dark powers it grants them, can also be given to Halloween residents... at a price. Those who receive this initiation are bound by something deeper than even FEAR to their task and duty.

The Four Clans

While the Four Clans themselves have been lost, murdered by the Hunters of Deus Ex Machina, the culture they cherished lives on in the survivors. Though the Horsemen are now only one clan, the Lost Clan, they retain their individual culture and skills...

»Conquest: An east-Orient themed tribe, the only one of the Clans who ruled through lineage and bloodlines. They subdue and subjugate, bringing others under their rule. The warriors are are in charge of the task of fighting and disposing of their enemies, namely humans... or even those that oppose them in Halloween.

»Death: A Nordic-themed tribe, ruled by the will and guidance of the teachings of Death. They are masters of metal, forging steel and working in more delicate substances to create jewelry. The Death clan act very much like a religious cult or a faction of priest and priestesses that reap and send off the souls of the Human World, delegating occasionally which ones are sent away and what others remain in Halloween. Their clan is one of the most established lines that eventually branched off from the general species known as "Reapers".

»Famine: A desert themed, nomadic tribe. They are scavengers, alchemists, and harvesters, going to the Human World to find prey for their Lairs. Their hierarchy system was simply based on their personal usefulness, and worked similar to a bee or ant colony, where there is one elected "queen" and everyone else is a worker.

»War: An Amazon themed, female ruled warrior tribe. All clan members are well equipped for battle, ready to fight at any moment. They are winged, and prefer to live in the trees. All are respected equally within War, and they direct their strife outwards rather than fighting among themselves. They perpetuate conflict and Fear in the Human World, and are also fighters in Halloween.

Amityvile Academy Year 1: Nose Goblins (Snots)
Year One students are just entering the Academy! Their ability to handle FEAR is limited, they have little to no battle experience, and they have yet to be allowed access to the Human World. While in this phase of their education, students will be introduced to a number of new things, in the hopes that they will gain general skills before starting to specialize.

Amityville Academy Year 2: Knob Goblins (Knobs)
Year Two students have a relatively firm grasp on the basics of battle and the theories behind gathering FEAR in the Human World. Their abilities increase as they continue to learn, growing in power and experience. Knobs are expected (but not required) to help out the newer, less experienced Snots in getting settled into Amityville. Sponsoring younger students has been known to garner bonus points with the administration. While continuing in their general education is welcome, students are encouraged to begin seeking out their specific areas of interest and skill.

Amityville Academy Year 3: Hob Goblins (Hobs)
Hobs are creatures on the verge of graduating into the adult society of Halloween. Their abilities have increased greatly since they first entered the Academy, and they are expected to have a good idea of what they want to do once they graduate. As they work to refine their skill set, they will need to be given closer, more personal attention from their instructors, along with a more intensive course schedule. They will be permitted greater access to the Human World, with the expectation that they will now be able to gather FEAR while being experienced enough to avoid some of that world's peculiar pitfalls.

Our owners list is located offsite - it is sortable by faction, name, owner, and artist. If you are logged in to the minipet site, you can even check to see which characters you own!

Both pre-made and custom character art are bought by stage. This means you get one stage when you buy a slot. There will be no long term "all-stage" contracts with the artists. You are not required to get additional stage art of your student if you don't want to. Additional art for existing characters can be obtained via freebies, bribes, and customs.

» Custom, bribe, and pet trade information is available here! Any openings of any kind will be posted in the News section.

It's a huge world inside that closet!

What are Minipets?
Minipets are collectable, click-based evolving pets run off of our adjunct site, This Is Minis! They can be won from in-thread events, contests, freebie gifting, trading, and the likes. If you wish to learn much more about minipets please click the link here to get started! The minipet site itself also features a wide variety of games and features, including minipet breeding, a battle system, on-site forums, a trading post, and much much more!

Within the world of TiH, minipets are the creatures that populate and wander around Halloween. Minipets, as indicated by their name, grow up to be no larger than 1-3 feet tall. While they cannot speak to true Halloweeners, they can talk among themselves and have their own adventures. Many Halloweeners keep minipets as... well, pets!

Minipet Types:

Credits:

Liz, Maru, and Zoo: For spending long gruelling nights on this. Srsly.

Orestae for the gorgeous front illustration, and demon_pachabel for the Deus and Horsemen illustrations. Also Sosiqui for the amazing thread revamp!

EVERYONE INVOLVED in contributing and helping this get started with ideas and art!

In the Name of the Moon!: For helping establish clear Gaia RP guidelines and a concise shop standard, in addition to various other things too numerous to count (like how many times we've made off with your couches). TiH considers Moonshop to be its sister-shop, go check it out!

Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas: For its awesomness, obv.
Also Beetlejuice and all those other creepy-fantastic movies.

Soul Eater: For inspiration on the academy setting and use of weapons, as well as drawback to certain elements such as Insanity.

Bleach should probably be in there too. Because having Hunters based off divisions sure wasn't inspired by that (AND NEITHER WERE CLEANING KITS)

Wikipedia: For everything. Never not wikipedia.

Quote:
THIS IS HALLOWEEN ART/CONVERSION T.O.S.

  • If a character is obtained through free methods, it cannot be gifted by the owner to another user. It must be given back to the shop to be rehomed officially. This includes characters obtained via free raffles, RP events, quest fairies, contests, and staff credits. The only exception to this is if the character has been roleplayed extensively over a significant period of time and has 10 or more RP points; and even then, the player must PM the mule to discuss rehoming the character. Negotiations can be of course requested to mule but rehoming a character equals giving the character back to the shop.

  • If you are owed art of a character, the shop may contact any available artist to fulfill the request. You are not guaranteed art from an artist that is unavailable, especially including guest artists! If you are still adamant about keeping the artists on your list, then the shop is not obligated to grow your character in any situation.

  • All artwork submitted to the shop that is official shop art is considered property of the shop assets. Please do not use art you do not own yourself (ie: other characters, shop graphics, etc) without shop permission or permission from the user that owns it.

  • If an artist picks up your work, and is not heard from within 1-2 months at all (no wips, no replies, etc), please contact the mule (WE ARE HALLOWEEN). If you got a wip but it has been a couple of months, please contact the mule as well. A reminder that you are more than free to rp the character as long as your enroll is approved - you do not have to wait on the art to RP!

  • Character growth art is not guaranteed. They can be earned through winning growth slots, or if an artist is available and willing to grow them. A character is fully RPable without growth art; it is merely a bonus.

  • Please do not privately contact artists about OFFICIAL SHOP ART. This includes asking artists for growth, asking them to pick up future alt art, or asking them for free customs. The only exception is if you have won a custom/growth/alt art from the shop that has assigned you to a specific artist that the mule OR Zoobey has confirmed. We have had a huge increased number of people try to harass artists for growth art, please DO NOT do this, it is extremely stressful on the artists! This is also very unfair to the people prior to you who have been waiting for a while for the same artists! Anyone caught doing so and reported by artists will be temporarily banned from obtaining a growth/custom/alt art and in severe cases, greylisted from the shop. If you REALLY REALLY wish for a specific artist to pick up your growth, we have plenty of custom events and bribes for everyone to participate it, which is the fairest way of doing this.

  • If you are converting a character from Amityville -> Deus or vice versa, you will only be allowed to claim growth art of that faction equal to the remaining amount of stages you had. That means a Y2 student -> Y1 Hunter will only one piece of art as a Hunter (You can pick Y1, Y2 or Y3 to get as Hunter). Of course, exceptions can be made if you win an alt art/growth custom slot, but this is for the FREE growths thread! Conversions from Deus to Amityville require no extra rp points, conversions from Amityville to Deus require a character to at least be at Y2 stage (but not necessarily have the art for it). When converting regardless of faction, you must submit a plot proposal to the mule (WE ARE HALLOWEEN) to be approved.

  • Once again art in this shop is on a PER STAGE contract! We will try our absolute best to grow your characters come the time as long as you submit in the growths thread, but as there are over 800+ characters in this shop, things may get hectic! The only guaranteed growths are once again auctions.
