Thread has come back to Pern.

In the ninth pass, AIVAS helped dragonriders move the Red Star out of orbit, so the parasite known as Thread would no longer fall. Late in the tenth pass, Harpers and Dragonriders became under appreciated. Dragonriders no longer had a purpose. Harpers sang of things to which people could no longer relate. Dragons are little more than a memory of what once was; a Pern with Thread. Pernese all over the planet are starting to believe that dragons had become obsolete.

All was well on Pern. Thread no longer was a hazard. Homes and holds have left the tradition of being made of stone, and people had begun building with wood. It hadn't rained Thread in over nine hundred turns.

Many believed it was gone for good.

They were wrong.

The Red Star had been knocked out of orbit, but like planets tend to do, it slowly realigned itself. It went on unnoticed by many of the Pernese, due to its inactive behavior. Thread will return, but the Passes and Intervals are erratic. Pern will suddenly require the aid of dragonriders once more--but after being scorned for turns, will the dragonriders assist?

2/22/13 - Hello new venturers and welcome back old friends! We're reviving and revamping this thread in preparation for the upcoming clutch on the Sands. For those that didn't know, Turnover at Ista Weyr was exciting in more ways than one! Not only did Thread fall unexpectedly over Ista Island, but Ticene, our lovely Weyrwoman, went into labor and gave birth to her and R'yn's first child!

Now with Weyrlings growing up and Thread a very real menace, Ista is getting serious about preparing it's young riders and future generations for the hardships they will come to face.

Ista, the fifth Weyr, is one of the most curiously constructed. Situated on the bay at the southwest corner of the Big Island, the black half volcano thrusts four fingers and a thumb into the tropical sky. The mountain must have been formed by an eruption that knocked the bay half of its caldera into the sea, letting lava flow in a gradual drop-off, which the pounding of the current has worn away into a plateau. For all its tiny size, Ista has a mind-boggling, mazelike warren of narrow tunnels that double back and run into one another.

Just offshore, a small mountain surfaces once in a while when there are earthshakes or upheavals. The beach under Ista Weyr is sand that, when inspected, proves to be black diamond dust.

Ista supplements the lack of dragonrider weyrs with “forest weyrs,” Cliffside dwellings on the outer face of the Bowl. It attained its full population shortly before the Second Pass in the year 258. Fresh water flows into the caverns from the northeast through underground streams. The corral where the herdbeasts graze has an artificial pool filled from pipes coming through the Weyr. With the sea so near at hand, there is no need for a bathing pool for dragons, though the dragonets who have not yet learned to fly like to bathe under the cataract of the artificial waterfall created by Ista Weyr’s architects in the north wall of the Bowl.
