XP Housing items are a pain to sell. I've got two funky looking canisters I've had for like 2 years

I guess if you look at it this way, that if it always gave out good stuff then it'd no longer be worth anything.. but if once in a while it was something good, it'd be worth even trying. Although it's become ritualistic to click that shtoopid button and claim my 25 gold or lame housing item, XP.

random question. How much do the kids resemble the vessels? Like would one whose vessel is an oversized cherry have really shiny red skin and green hair?

It varies, n_n. The human spirit is always the most dominant so the resulting Hiccup will be more human than vessel. But! I'm leaving it open for more feral Hiccups, for example, just not a wolf cub who happens to speak English or something, XD. But a cherry, hrm.. they would BLEED YUMMY! XDDD
