nce upon a time... a door opened.
Attention shouldn't be drawn so much to the type of door. Or even to the fact that it was a door that stood seemingly of its own accord. Or the fact that the door stood inside the remains of a very tall, gutted factory. Actually, we probably shouldn't even mention that said factory had been closed to the public (as in the entrance door had literally been welded shut within a steel and concrete frame... I suppose because no one thought to bust through the upper windows) for nearly a decade.
The inner door had been open and shut to many times in its lifetime that it really didn't matter what kind of object was used to hold the divide of the world of Gaia to those... "other places". G-Corp was dead, Gambino was dead. Edmund was very much alive but too caught up in the affairs of Gaia's new world that he probably wouldn't have noticed or even have been fazed now by what the door actually did and brought to his world and into Durem's dark alleys.
The real attention should be drawn to how they were being brought to the world. Not simply by natural means. Not by a mother and father alien on some remote little planet who sought a better life for their child. No, that would make too much sense.
Alchemy and the ancient knowledge involved in the construction of the homunculus. It had long been believed that not just anyone could create such things and that it took many years of training and almost a lifetime of work and dedication to perfect the art. But Syrcaid was neither old, all that scholarly, or even all that dedicated and somehow she had stumbled upon the secrets. It was by sheer chance that she discovered that Gambino had been right... with enough money you could do damn near anything.
