Fences tall as the eye can see envelope the perimeters of a pitiful landscape stretching for many miles around the rockies, holding captive predators, prey, and - of course - the canine victims of the “great experiment”. Yet biodiversity is scarce, and rescources are limited; tubes filled with synthetic sustenance line the last trees, yet they cannot keep a creature alive alone.

Far off in the distance, men and women in white coats can be seen through barbed wire fencing. Your paws sink into dead earth. You peer at the looming Thing – whatever it may be. An undistinguishable canine is escorted out of the Thing, but you know to avoid the bewildered creature. Things happen beyond the fence.

In a laboratory, HeLa cells are produced at rapid rates, Changing World Technologies (TWT) turn waste, guts, and blood into fuel, Pavlovian conditioning tests are conducted – among other things – and CanMap desperately conducts a study of great magnitude, that these rare canines might be used to the advantage of humankind…

Evocality is based upon the principles of eugenics, quantum mechanics, climate change, biomedical engineering, evolution, psychobiology, environmental science, philosophy, social conditioning, and stem cell research, to name a few. NERDFEST. If this scares you, run. Run FAAAAR away, and never return! /Scarimpression*cough*

Let me start by saying that any and all scientific information presented in any aspect of Evocality - except perhaps my vision of "the future", which in itself has been extensively researched - is completely factual. Please also note that it is not the intention of the Evocality staff to offend anyone. Like I said, if this is not your beef, don't bite.

There are many aspects which set Evocality apart from your basic B/C shop. For one, it is tied to an RPG/social-networking site, but more on this later. Second, there IS NO CURRENCY. This is a trading game. That means that you will never, ever buy an Evo pet.

You, the "observer", are a breeder. You obtain pets not through purchase, but through cunning and wit, using your own research skills and personal knowledge in group roleplay with mods/staff who are trained to throw you off. There are other ways of obtaining a pet, of course, but it all requires intellectual and creative maturity.

As I have mentioned, Evo is a trading-breeding game, inspired by the Belyaev selective breeding experiment on silver foxes.

The point is to diverge as far from what is natural as possible via breeding, creating more and more "domestic" canines. Here in Chauncer, Idaho (a fictional basis-town), canines, because of their genetic malleability, are subject to a great experiment - or perhaps experiments? These have gone awry, and blue polka-dot dogs are running amuck, howling at the moon. Are the scientists (are they scientists?) doing this for good, or for evil? That is a question you must uncover only through roleplay.

It is your job to correctly use canumbers (see below) to your advantage, breeding and trading, while hopefully stimulating your brain at the same time!

Wolves, dogs, foxes, and strange, canine-like creatures (all for future commission) all wander these sparsely wooded parts, mingling as though they have become one in a turbulent world. What has become of "evolution"? Are They playing God? Are you?

How do I apply?
➽ Well first, you have to grab a hold of this pretty woman! She's all yours to color, but NOT TO STEAL. Remember, there are many guard-dogs with sharp teeth protecting these lines...

The lineart is already shaded and templated. If you're hired, all you have to do is color! If you're applying, don't worry about shading or anything, just try your best at making a pretty pooch! And *hint* I will be needing a lot of naturally colored wolves, dogs, and animal-prints shortly, so it may help your cause to color something around those lines for your sample/s. You may use edits!

Of course, you may color as many as you want, how you want! I WILL eventually need complicated coats too! I would also love to see some previous work you've done in other shops, if you have any examples. Just post your entries in the thread. :] There is no official entry form, given the flexibility of the job.

Now here is where we differ from other shops. Being as this is a non-profit trading game, there is no stabile profit, meaning that most of the gold you will be payed will be from me, out-of-pocket. After being hired, we will work out a personal payment plan, whether you'd like to be payed per canine, monthly, etc.

The other great aspect of this job, if I do say so myself, is that you color what you want, when you want. You have no set deadlines. You can disappear for a month and still have a job. You can color only one dog a month. Honestly, I don't care. I just need talented individuals, and I am going to be very picky.

Now some basic rules:

What if I become a colorist...
➽ See the golden retriever in the third post down from the top? He is colored yellow-esque, and yet he is not just colored yellow. There is shading in the coloring that makes him unique from, say, another golden retriever (because there WILL be more!). You must find a way to make each coloring, however simplistic, unique.
➽ I understand that there is a butterfly in the male wolf cub lines. While you must color it, please do not make it so elaborate that it detracts from the actual wolf. In fact, I -prefer- solid colors.
➽ Color the actual lines a few shades darker than the coat.
➽ Do not line-edit without permission from Leef!
➽ In the case of you coloring puppies, you must color both the pup AND the adult lines prior to their being distributed.
➽ Must have a thorough understanding of how canumbers work if you want to do breedings!

What is a "mod"?
➽ Mods are exactly what you think they are. They keep the Gaia thread and website threads in line. They facilitate staff roleplays and hand out pups that the colorists have prepared. They are essentially managers, on steroids. They are my henchmen. >D

It does help to have knowledge of website construction and graphic design, although this is hardly a requirement. However, I do need to see that you are a capable of writing and have a good understanding of the shop concept. Much like coloring, you can work as much or as little as you want, as long as I have a handful of people ready to help. (:

And yes, I will say right now that I will favor my friends and people who are very active in this thread over the occasional visitor.

Your pet’s canumber dictates the rarity of your canine (canine + number, HAHAhaaa), and helps predict its offspring – and whether you’ve got a champion bred, or a fluke.

The canumber, or CA#, is perhaps the most pivotal aspect of this “game”. It illustrates the exact profile of your pup, your canine’s specific “points”, and, in the cases of TTFs and Canids (more on this later), identifies how primitive your canine is.

So what is rarity, anyway? Well, let’s take a look at the CA# profile, in order of least rare to rarest… that is, if that’s your goal as the breeder!

Rarity
➽ False to Form (FTF): a dog looks like a wolf, a wolf looks like a dog
➽ True to Form (TTF): a wolf looks like a wolf, a dog looks like a dog
➽ Canid (C): ex: a wolf is colored like a wild dog
➽ Domestic (D): ex: a wolf is colored like a cat, parrot, hamster, etc.
➽ Natural (N): a wolf is colored like a cheetah, badger, etc.
➽ Unique (U): dog/wolf/etc. has random coloration (blue, purple, etc.) OR unnatural patterning
➽ Exotic (E): random coloration & unnatural patterning. Ex: purple stars!

The goal (for some breeders, at least), is to own Exotics. They are the holy grail of the Evocality trading system. However, if you want to breed a wolf that looks like an Australian Shepherd, or trade a rare for one, heck, I wouldn’t blame you!

But how to get there? Every canine distributed, unless you have a deal with an Evoc mod/admin (*cough*), will be TTF. That is, lots of dogs that look like dogs running around. This is where “points” come into play.

“Points” can be gathered through roleplay (whether a mod sees that you are very active with a pet and awards it one, or through roleplay with Evoc staff), being part of a pack (pack members awarded +1 points, pack alphas awarded +3 points), breeding, and through the general happiness of the canine.

“Happiness” is OOC. It means the more roleplayed, the better profile for your pet, treatment of parents (better for pups), showing off of your particular pet (whether through siggy, random chat, pet inventory, etc.) and more… more “love”. Think quantum mechanics. What if you were to create your OWN reality?

So, yes! Points do travel by parents to pup, by taking the mean of the points of each parent and then, whalaaa! Random generator does its stuff. My advice: rack up the points before you go about breeding, and here’s why:

Notice False to Form? Breed your canine with low canumber points and you’ll wind up with something weird, something that - by the definitions of trading - is not valuable. On the other hand, if your pet’s canumber PROFILE is low, it can breed more quickly and easily, versus a high (and thus more rare) canumber profile produces a slower breeding rate, but perhaps more pups.

Now going back to your TTF. If you want to breed for a higher canumber profile, either a) rack up points, or b) breed with a pet with a higher canumber profile! For instance, breed a Canid and Unique and you might end up with a Natural in your litter. Breed a TTF with another TTF of poor point quality and you’ll end up with a FTF, which, in fact, has its benefits also. FTFs have a miniscule - yet highly favored – 5% chance of producing a mutant! (mutants are cute, trust me.)

So let’s go over this. I have a wolf with CA# D11. This means that my wolf is a Domestic with 11 points. Now say I have a dog with CA# Cd2. This is a Canid with 2 points, but what does the lowercase “d” stand for?

Well, as our story background tells us, the “researchers” are aiming for the least primitive dog, as far as Canids and TTFs apply. According to the type of dog coloration, aka breed, (this applies to FTF wolves as well), it will be typed with either “a”, “b”, “c”, or “d”, (“d” being most primitive) according to the historical age of the breed. If your pet is type “d”, it has a lower chance of producing pups that will go up the profile scale.

The same goes for wolves, which are more primitive than the average dog. Breed a wolf and a dog together, and you are likely to end up mostly with wolves, and with lower profile scales at that.

Got it? Good.

No. I know it’s confusing. This is a genetics game, but with a human touch. So ask questions! We don’t bite! … well.

How do I get a pet NOW?
A staff RP may breakout in the IT thread, or perhaps we may do something random and creative. Keep a close eye on this thread! At this moment - just below this post, in fact - there is a story called "Sweet Peas". Interpret it as a scholar. Analyze, simply comment, do something creative in response, do what you will! Quote me in a post with your literary response and, if you REALLY move me, you might find a little stranger in your inbox. :]

I still don't quite understand canumbers...
Canumbers are basically a classification system and a tally of breeding points. I think the best way to explain those is like this:

Think of the shop like an arcade. By participating in activities, you get 'tickets'. Now, all prizes cost tickets. Some prizes only cost a few tickets, but they aren't as rare or as valuable as the prizes that cost more tickets. You can apply your tickets towards any prize. You can save up your tickets and use them in one big go, or you can spread them out.

Now, replace tickets with points and prizes with puppies and you've got the gist of points. A canumber is just the ID prefix (TTF, FTF, etc.) and the points you've applied to a specific canine towards its future puppies.

In the photobucket, no numberical points are given. The numbers in filenames just mean that's the 3rd or 7th or whatever canine that I've colored because I'm weird like that and number the files.
