Before the Runbuns arrived, life was slow in Fábel, like the rivers that flowed through the Tortuga lands. Days were spent basking in the dappled sunshine and snoozing in the shade. In these early days, a baby Tortuga was born. His parents watched anxiously as he struggled from his egg... But their child's flippers had flat bottoms. He would not be able to swim. Still, his parents weren't going to give up on him. As an infant, Grantor- for this little Tortuga was Grantor- splashed in the shallows and slept on the land. He grew up, and grew wiser, more respected as a leader.
Then the Runbuns arrived. They kicked up dust in their wake, and the Tortuga people collectively gathered on the beaches to see what these strange, furred creatures were with hostility in their eyes, until the two groups heard young laughter. A teen Tortuga and a teen Runbun were dashing about, up and down a stretch of river. There was silence, as the Tortugas all turned their gaze to Grantor...
And Grantor, he of long silences and wise nuggets of wisdom, began to cheer in his deep, croaky voice.
And so the races began.
The tracks were made alongside the rivers, by Runbuns compacting earth with their strong hind legs. And they raced, life speeding up from the soothing pace it had once been at, and Granthor presiding over it all.
However, all summers have to end. The Runbuns were due to move on, and the Tortugas would have an arduous wait until their newfound friends came back. There was sadness amongst both groups. Grantor, ever the leader, sensed it, and approached the Runbuns with a suggestion: they should stay, and race some more.
Baby- 1 week: Babies are relatively inactive. They are kept close to the nesting area. They can't speak fully but they can make sounds and communicate a little with their parents (Much like a human baby under 6 months old)
Child- 2 weeks: Children are active and free to roam where they please (with their parents permission) Though it is rare to see a child too close to the river outside of races. They can participate in some races. Children CANNOT swim. Children runbuns do interact with tortugas (usually teens and younger)
Adult- Forever: Adults may come and go as they please. Some adults may learn to swim but will never stray from the shallow edges of the river. Adult runbuns commonly interact with tortugas, but usually only socialize regularly with adults and teens. They may participate in races.
Egg :: 3 days-1 week The eggs are found in a nest of soft sand by the river. They are pretty to look at but do nothing more than entice you with anticipation. Keep a close eye on it and stay in the area and it will hatch.
Child :: 1 week Children are mobile but slow, they don't participate in any racing events, and are kept around the nesting area. Their parents may introduce them to the water, and they socialize with mostly other babies. They can however have interactions with other ages. Adult :: 2 weeks Adults are fully active! They are free to explore the world. They mostly stay in the water or on the beach surrounding the water, but in rare cases go further inland. It is trouble for them to do so. They participate in racing events, and interact with other tortugas and possibly even runbuns. They are able to breed
The familiars in the Land of Fábel are the fish, mouse, and frog. Fish can only live underwater, so therefore if they choose a companion it will always be a tortuga. Mice can only live above ground, so if they choose a companion it will always be a runbun. However, the amphibious frogs have known to accompany both. Of course, some familiars choose to stay by themselves as well.
