What is the most screwed up book you have ever read and why? (Try not to spoil the whole book.)

For me, I would have to say Invisible Monsters by Chuck Palahniuk. Because it is about a beautiful super model that gets her jaw shot off.
Hrm... Some of the bits in The Prince of Nothing were terrifyingly dark. Mostly stuff involving Cnaiur or the Sranc. ESPECIALLY the Sranc. Violent mutants with clothes made of human skin who ejaculate black semen because they get sexually aroused by killing are pure nightmare fuel. Fortunately the books are so brilliant that I can still make it through.
anna karinina.

the whole thing is messed up. then it just ends horribly.
best romance ever...my a**.

OMGILOVETHATBOOK!!!

Sorry, I love Chuck Palahniuk's work. You see Twifans who see Meyer as the goddess of literature...well, That's how I am with Palahniuk.

And if you thought that was messed up, don't ever start his book Haunted. You won't get past page 21. I guarantee it.

Haunted was awesome! Seriously the most twisted, disgusting, disturbing piece of literature I've ever read. It's one of my favorites.

The Time Traveler's Wife. It was wonderfully odd and disjointed, but that was what made it so interesting to read. The jumping back and forth through time and between PoVs was a bit of a brain bender at times, though. :<

Ender's Game by Orsont Scott Card ... made me physically sick reading it. As well as Sabriel by Garth Nix.

Johnny got his Gun by Dalton Trumbo. It's about a soldier (can't remember his name at the moment) who goes to war and ends up in a hospital bed with no arms, legs and he can't see, hear or speak. The entire book is from his point of view and I found it completely disturbing.

Slightly off-topic, but the Metallica song One is about that book. It's one of their best tracks, so...kind of fitting that the inspiration would come from such a heavy source.

(I've been wanting to get my hands on that book for a while, but I can't find a copy. Sadface.)
House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski screwed me up for a while. I couldn't sleep at night and ended up putting a heavy padlock on my closet.
What Happened to Lani Garver by Carol Plum-Ucci. It's one of my favourite books ever, but it gets really out of hand towards the end; I remember that the last chapter had me in silent shock, wide eyed and lips slightly parted as the words engulfed me. It was so not cool....But I love the book for that, and I re-read it constantly.

I tried to reread that the other day, to see the way that things that seemed really off-topic before fit together, but I couldn't. I was a few pages in and had to stop because I was literally shaking. My copy made it to the bottom of my laundry hamper again, the lamp beside my bed stays on all night, and now I've started locking my bedroom door at night.

Jeezum, that's a fantastic book. :3
When Rabbit Howls - Truddi Chase

Quote:
When Rabbit Howls, by Truddi Chase, is a personal account of life with dissociative identity disorder, formerly known as multiple personality disorder. The author experienced a tremendous amount of horrific sexual, physical, and emotional child abuse at the hands of her stepfather from the age of two until her teens, as well as emotional and physical abuse from her mother. Due to this abuse, Chase started developing alternate personalities from as early as two years of age in order to deal with the realities of her life. This book is her explanation of what it is like to live with the 92 different personalities that eventually developed, who she calls “The Troops,” as well as descriptions of her progress made through therapy with Dr. Robert Phillips, her psychologist. The primary focuses of the book are the process of unearthing her traumatic memories of abuse, as well as the way that each personality deals with these experiences and appears to the world.

The title of the book refers to one of Chase’s many personalities, a very young child named Rabbit that suffered especially horrendous sexual abuse. Other personalities inside the author include a large black man named “Mean Joe,” an Irish man named “Ean,” a sophisticated woman named “Lady Catherine,” and several children. Each personality is described as having a specific purpose, and each experience different emotions and have their own memories. Essentially, the core personality then never had to deal fully with the abusive experiences. The author wrote this book as part of her psychotherapy, and in hopes of helping others in similar situations to deal with their pasts and struggles as a multiple

A possible drawback of the book is the complexity of the writing style, which can be somewhat confusing as it is written in the first person, but by numerous personalities. Sometimes the personalities switch as many as five or six times within a single page. Furthermore, the explicit and appalling nature of the abuse the author experienced would not be appropriate for children or adolescents. Given the book’s somewhat longer length, it would also be appropriate to perhaps suggest a few chapters for clients to read rather than the book in its entirety. Use of When Rabbit Howls should always be done with the individual reader in mind regarding its appropriateness. A thorough explanation of what DID is should be given to the reader before the book is suggested, due to the fact that aspects of DID are considered unbelievable by some.

Quote:
When Rabbit howls, everyone listens. Rabbit is one of the youngest personalities of the woman and makes a sound like a dying rabbit. Rabbit was apparently created (or at least the howling part of Rabbit was) when her stepfather stepped on baby rabbits out of cruelty just to hear the rabbits cry. He also stepped on, hung upside down on a rope, strapped to a high chair, threw into a well and performed every imaginable sex act on "the woman" of this book, Truddi Chase. She is referred to in this book by the authors (the Troops) as "the woman." The woman was a later life creation to take the place of two younger parts who died. In the process of creation, the Troops took away her memories and left her simply as an empty shell - a shell who would not be present for the many activities that the Troops handled. The division was so complete that 3 or 4 of the Troops could have a drink and neither the woman nor the other Troops would get drunk. The same was true for migraines, smoking, and many other activities. After one long night of drinking 3 or 4 of the Troops had gotten drunk and she awoke to find a trail of Alkaseltzer coated glasses around the apartment.
The Metamorphosis. It wasnt shocking or anytthing, but the ending just pissed me off to no end.

And the family was screwed up. not in a"'ZOMG, Mom's a drug addicted pornstar and Dad's out of the closet again with his three ********!" way, but in a "What the HELL are they thinking?"

It's by Kafka, there's always a defeatist attitude in his books, if you read his meditations you get a real sense of his depression... He even ordered all his works to be destroyed when he died as he saw them as too poor.

Though I do know what you mean, the family didn't seem to care at all but rather just shrug and move on as if they were finally happy again after the death. What's more interesting though is that I had a feeling that there was an incest back theme there, at least in the way he describe guarding his sister...
