Actually, the Munchkins aren't the same size as everyone else.

Quote:
They were not as big as the grown folk she had always been used to; but neither were they very small. In fact, they seemed about as tall as Dorothy, who was a well-grown child for her age, although they were, so far as looks go, many years older.
-the first book

That's just the group of Munchkins that Dorothy meets in the first book. If you continue to read the books, Dorothy ends of meeting lots of Munchkins that are normal size, if not taller than her. In the seventh book, the main character is a Munchkin boy named Ojo. He's the same height as Dorothy, and his grandfather is taller than her. smile

Just wanted to say you are awesome. My significant other and myself have a collection of all of the Baum books all the way up to Glynda of Oz and we hope to keep getting the ones that were written after he died. It's wonderful to see people who enjoy the book series!!!

Oh man, I need to get back into that series. I read like three or four of them but got lazy.

*spoiler*
I loved Tip because he turned out to be a chick, and I thought that was HILARIOUS and awesome. I also like the suffragettes, attacking people with knitting needles in the second or third book...

There was this animated movie in Disney which is based on the time before The wizard of Oz, the protagonist is a girl but she's not Dorothy and she becomes the flower princess/ queen (something like that) the antagonist is the wicked witch of the east, I forgot what it was called, can anyone tell me?
Let me tell you, those books are amazing. No Harry Potter or sparkly ^#$%^$&ing vampires can touch this series in my mind. I loved the '39 movie for many reasons, though plot adherence certainly is not one of them, but the '80s-era movie Return to Oz has to be my favorite of film adaptations. I think that he books got better as the series progressed, though my favorite character was never really explored in as much depth as I would like. (No points for guessing who he is.)

THIS. Yes. I completely agree... I'm pretty sure they'll never get closer than Return to Oz, (sadly), although I sincerely wish someone would turn all of the books into faithful movies.
Nick Chopper is one of my favorite characters. :3 I wish people knew more about him and his sad, sad back story. sad Everyone just thinks he's a random Tin Man that Dorothy meets in the woods... *sigh*
Omg. : D It's been a long, long time since I've read the series in full, and I remember very few details, but Baum's Oz series represents some of the happiest memories of my childhood. It is the perfect fantasy for children--- imaginative, lovingly crafted, an expansive and intricately detailed world inhabited by legions of fanciful characters, a compelling portrayal of what it means to be good and clean and beautiful without needing to moralize or condescend.
