you know why they made Dorothy a teenager (she's, like, the age 12 in the movie)?
it's only because Judy Garland was sixteen and they couldn't find any younger girls that could sing as good as her.

Well, that, and they didn't really care about the plot anyway. ^^ Originally, they were going to get Shirley Temple to be Dorothy, but she dropped out due to lack of interest. (I bet she kicked herself after that...)
It makes me mad, though! Shirey Temple would have been perfect! Well, I do have to say that Judy Garland is a much better actress, for sure... But Shirley Temple looked exactly how Dorothy is described in the book. ^^
They can't have been too concerned with the singing talent of the actress, however... If they originally wanted Temple, they were going for cuteness, not talent. Sure, she was cute... But her voice wasn't anything fantastic, and actually needed a lot of work.

XD That's okay, I didn't either until I found one of the books at a Goodwill, and was shocked to find that it was actually the forth book in the series!! ^^ But they're soooooo awesome!!
ALL HAIL OZMA!

Odd thing is I DO know who you are. But not from the books but a play my brother and sister are involved in through their high school, but I can't think of the play title off the top of my head. (My sister has the role of Ozma who is Queen of Oz in the play.) It does give credit to the original books, but I've never actually read them. Tik-tok is 'introduced' to those who are only familiar with the movie version as well.

I think I have an aversion to the movie "The Wizard of Oz" simply because I've had so many people do the "Auntie Em" thing at me. (yeah... I know... I just gave away my RL name there)

I've often thought about trying to read the original books to see how they compare... but never got around to it. Ain't that sad?
Okay, so here is my advice, since it is hard to find the actual books. Why not try the e-book version? I know, I prefer to have the read deal in my hands to snuggle up and read, but you can get them free on several different websites. They are in the public domain now and there is nothing illegal about it. Try these sites for the Oz books, as well as many more.

Thanks so much for this! This will help anyone who are interested in reading these great books. I may even quote this in the first post. ^__^
I've only read one book online, because I just couldn't find it anywhere, even on special order. It was J. M. Barrie's (the author of Peter Pan) The Little White Bird, which is a very strange, very interesting book. ^^

Well I have 3 copies of The Marvelous Land of Oz. One is in a collection of 15 books (easy to find), the next is in 2 volumes from Borders with 14 books total, and the third one is a copy of just that book from a thrift shop. That thrift shop where I got the first two books sparked my intrest in Oz.

So, which of the books is your favorite? Mine is 'Tik-Tok of Oz', because it introduces Betsy Bobbin, Hank, and has lots of Tik-Tok, all three some of my very favorite characters. In that book, they also journeyed through some of my favorite worlds. ^__^

Well my favorite characters are Jack Pumpkinhead (top favorite), then The Shaggy Man, The Tin Woodman, Tik-Tok, Cap'n Bill, and the I will say Ozma. All, but Jack are hard choices, since Jack will always be my favorite.

Still my favorite books are: The Marvelous Land of Oz (Jack was introduced), The Road to Oz, Tic-Tok of Oz, Visitors from Oz, and Glinda of Oz.

Tik-Tok is such a fun character, but since he doesn't feel (I hope you get what I mean), so I can't put him as my top favorite. Still a loyal and true character. Jack is a Pumpkinhead and is just kind. He also tries to figure things out and is smarter than he gets credit for (look at 'His Magesty the Scarcrow' in The Marvelous Land of Oz).

Have you seen the 1986 Disney film 'Return to Oz'? If so, what are your thoughts on that movie?

I will be truthful, I hated it. It mixed the books together in such an odd way and Jack was all wrong somehow. Expecially his voice. My largest problem is how all of the book characters in it seemed wrong and not how I wanted them, but this is just my feel. A poor attempt at a sequel for the first movie and a poor way of putting two books together.

How about you?

I have mixed feelings about that movie. I thought the effects were very good for the year the film was made, and I did like that they were trying to be a little more true to the books than the original. (Mentioning the Deadly Desert, Dorothy being the proper age, the Lion being an actual lion and not a man in a suit... And my favorite, Dorothy actually telling the story of how the Tin Woodsman came to be... Stuff like that.)
At the same time, I agree with you, it did mix up book two and three very strangely, and I hate, hate what they did with Mombi and the Nome King. I actually really love the Nome King in the books, (or rather, Roquat the Red. ^^) and don't like what they did with him at all.
They also took many aspects from the original movie, that I just hated... Her real life leaking over into her 'dream' of Oz, (which was never a dream in the first place... >.< ) and waking up at the end only to find that it was all just a dream. And Ozma wasn't right. scream There was no Tip, and she turned out to just be a metephor for Dorothy's longing to stay in her dream world of Oz.
Again, I have mixed feelings about it. All I can say is that although they messed up so many things and screwed it up so royally, at least it was closer to the books than the original movie. XD
Which is sad, lol
I've been meaning to read the series for a long time. However, they aren't the easiest books to find. At least, where I lived they weren't.

I actually found out that it was a book first through the band Ozma. I commented on the name and my sister told me it was because of Princess Ozma of Oz. Then of course I had to ask who that was and boy what a surprise!

XD I've heard of that band, and always wondered if their name was based off of Princess Ozma... Guess it was!
And if you're interested in reading the books, someone posted some nice links to websites that have the books on them. I quoted those links in the first post. ^^
I've read the first 6 or 7 of the books... I want to read all 40 or so that are considered to be part of the accepted cannon of the series, though. 3nodding

The Nome King is not in my top four, but you got to love him. The Ozma thing really bugged me as well and just how they mentioned things from the books that were more accurate than the other movie, but left out things that affected This movie more. I think my typing shows that I'm tired...Still good news I've ordered Jack Pumpkinhead of Oz off of amazon.

Amazon has all of the books up to 30, but after that it floped out. I can easily get my hands on the first 14, but will have to work to get the rest.

Actually, you don't have to read them online. You download them to your computer, or if you happen to have a palm pilot or something similar you can put them on it. Some of the better and newer phones let you read e-books on them.
