I have some suggestions for you.
Have you tried:
*
Scott Westerfeld. You know, the "Uglies" series guy. He actually has quite a bit of science fiction, and I've really liked all of it that I've read. A new book of his just came out, "Leviathan," and "The Risen Empire" (2 books) and "Evolution's Darling" were cool, too.
*
Diana Wynne Jones. If you like Tamora Pierce, you might like her, too.
*
Patricia A. McKillip. A great fantasy writer with a fairy-tale feel to her books--not unlike "The Last Unicorn," but she doesn't make jokes like Beagle does (he wasn't taking things seriously when he wrote
Unicorn, which may be why I like if so much). I've pretty much loved most of what she's done. Try "Alphabet of Thorn" or "The Forests of Serre" to get started on her.
*
Robin McKinley. Some great fantasy. Try starting with "The Hero and the Crown" or "Dragonhaven." And "Sunshine" was plain awesome.
*
Peter Dickinson. Try "The Ropemaker." (fantasy)
*
Ursula K. LeGuin. She does both fantasy and sci-fi and is best known for The Earthsea Cycle (5 books starting with "The Wizard of Earthsea"
wink and "The Left Hand of Darkness," sci-fi.
*Have you ever read "The Once and Future King" by
T.H. White? Big, fat classic. Re-telling of the stories of King Arthur, and he writes with such depth, humor, and intelligence--you may enjoy this one.
