The Mists of Avalon Author: Marion Zimmer Bradley. It covers the classic story of King Arthur but its not no happy walt disney version of this story its actually very mature and grown up and has its darker elements to it.

Here's a short blip about the book that is found on chapters.indigo.ca
Arthur sits on the throne of Britain, and it is his task to maintain the uneasy balance between the old ways and the new. But although the knights of Camelot owe their first allegiance to Arthur, the king himself is held in the sway of several powerful women, each of whom is determined to bend his authority toward her own ends. In The Mists of Avalon Marion Zimmer Bradley spins a familiar tale, but lends it a refreshing quality... for it is not the story of Gawaine, Arthur, or Launcelot. Instead, it is the story of Gwenhwyfar, Viviane and Morgaine - the women relegated to the shadows by legend and history, but who ply their invisible influence nevertheless.

another good fantasy is the series Writen by Holly Taylor that also tells of King Arthur but is different than the previous that i mention it relies on the traditions of the culture in which the story is set. there is a lot of Celtic practices that are mentioned in the books and the second book covers what hint at the christian traditions and the struggle between the two for the protagonist in these books.

the books in this series are thus far. Night Birds Reign, Crimson Fire and Cry of Sorrow and soon to be released May Earth Rise with a release date set for june but may be delayed
here's teh blips from these books as well:

Night Birds Reign: The legend is as old as time ...

The High King is dead. The land is in peril. A child has been born to save his people. But a traitor lurks with evil in his mind and murder in his heart, dogging the footsteps of those who protect the babe who would be king.

But magic is at work, high magic.

Gwydion the Dreamer awakes, screaming, from a prophetic dream of tragedy and loss, a dream peopled by kings of the past. Though he thinks he is not ready, the Shining Ones lay a task upon him: protect young Arthur; and locate Caladfwich, the lost sword of the last, murdered High King of Kymru.

Dodging assassins to find the woman who holds the key to unlock a horrible secret, and fighting the longings of his own shattered heart, Gwydion sets out upon his odyssey. And finds that fate cannot be fulfilled without sacrificing the life of someone he loves ...

Crimson Fire: In the land of Corania, the lone survivor of a shipwreck, a Kymric woman, makes her way to shore, gives birth to her child, and dies. So begins a cycle of events that will end in a tragic war.

Havgan of Corania knows he is different from others, although he does not know why. He does know, however, he hates the witches of Kymru with all his heart. When his years of scheming come to fruition and he becomes Warleader of Corania, he sets the might of the Empire against Kymru.

In Kymru, Gwydion the Dreamer dreams of the coming destruction of his country and the deaths of those he loves. Desperate to unravel the truth of the dream, he seeks out Rhiannon and together they join in a race against time. Traveling to Corania to spy on Havgan, they are accepted into his household and try to uncover his plans while concealing their true identities. In their frantic attempt to save Kymru, they risk everything. But when an unthinking action threatens to doom them all, Gwydion and Rhiannon must fight not only to discover Havgan's secret, but understand why Havgan seems so hauntingly familiar.

And escape Corania alive …

Cry of Sorrow:
The Coranians have won the war, Kymru is defeated. For Havgan, however, the victory is not complete.

Cadair Idris, the hall of the High Kings, remains closed to him. To gain entrance he must locate the Four Treasures—the Stone, the Spear, the Cauldron and the Sword—and bring them to the Guardian of the Doors. Only then can he proclaim himself High King of Kymru.

But the Treasures were hidden long ago, after the death of the last High King. To find them Gwydion the Dreamer must locate a long-forgotten song, and the clues it contains. Following the dictates of the song, he persuades Rhiannon, her daughter Gwenhwyvar, and his nephew Arthur to set out with him on the dangerous quest.

Dogged by Havgan's soldiers they race against time to find the artifacts. But the difficult journey is made even harder by the distrust they have for each other, as well as the necessity to face their own worst fears in order to succeed and gain entrance into Cadair Idris—only to watch helplessly as Arthur risks his life, and his very soul, on the next move in the deadly game.

The Percy Jackson series by Rick Riordan. Good, good series. And anything by Amelia Atwater-Rhodes. You might like the series that begins with "Hawksong." The other series begins with "Into the forests of the night." It was her first book.

omg i just finished reading the percy jackson series
The Book i recommed is : Spent. I dont remeber the author. Its about using evolutionary anthropology to try and explain modern day consumeris in humans. I ve only read the first few pages but im going to buy it once my 40% off coupon comes in the email. xp
I'm looking for a good fantasy book, not a vampire book. They can be in it, but I'd rather it not focus on them. Mermaids/men would be a plus. I recently created a mer world and I want to see what others have done with it. I generally fall in love books with well-developed world and good characters. I want a break from satire like Pratchett--read too much of that stuff recently.

My favorite author is Sharon Shinn. I enjoy Terry Pratchett and Jane Austen. I really enjoyed The Traveler by John Twelve Hawks. I'm a fan of Diana Wynne Jones, Tamora Pierce, and Harry Potter. I've read The Book Thief and dislike Twilight. The book After by Francis Prose was fascinating for me--something similar would be appreciated.

Thanks for any suggestions you have!

~Child of The Dark Prophecy
~Shadows on the Stars
~The Eternal Flame

both of those series are by T.A Barron XD

The Gemma Doyle Series:

~A Great and Terrible Beauty
~Rebel Angels
~The Sweet Far Thing

Those books are all by Liba Bray

other books I suggest are:

I am the Cheese~Robert Cormier
The Taking~ Dean Koontz

That's all for now...I'll figure out some more later XD

I love The Lost Years of Merlin! I thought I was the only one. I currently started reading The Sword of Truth Series. Its the basis for the tv show Legend of the Seeker. The series starts with Wizard's First Rule. The books are long but worth it. Im on the second one now. Their freakin awesome.
Alright, I'm looking for some new reads. I love high fantasies that aren't medieval-style, but I also read steampunk and other alternative histories, Victorian gothic, zombie apocalypses, a select breed of science fiction (although I really love science fantasy), magical realism, fantastique, Lovecraftian horror, torture fic (and psychological thrillers), harlequins, faerie tales, and that sort of thing. Here are some of my favorite novels and authors:

Naomi Novik's Temeraire series, J.R.R. Tolkien, The Worm Ouroboros by E.R. Eddison, William Shakespeare, H.P. Lovecraft, China Miéville, Snow Crash by Neal Stephenson, The Communist Manifesto by Karl Marx, 120 Days of Sodom by the Marquis de Sade, Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov, The Book Thief by Markus Zusak, Ivan Krylov, the Brothers Grimm, The Master and Margarita by Mikhail Bulgakov, Lewis Carroll, Algernon Charles Swinburne, The Tale of Genji by Lady Murasaki, The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde, Holly Black, One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez, The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho, The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold, Isaac Asimov, Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell by Susanna Clarke, Jonathan Swift, the Nibelungenlied, the Prose and Poetic Edda, the Vinland Saga, Journey to the West by Wu Cheng'en, William Butler Yeats, "--All You Zombies--" by Robert Heinlein, Fyodor Dostoyevsky, Kim Newman's Anno Dracula series, The Prince by Machiavelli

I'll read any writer worth their salt, really. I particularly enjoy the style of Jane Austen, although I am not a fan of her books (replace the names for one, and you have the other). Thomas Hardy is the master of dialogue, in my opinion, so if you know any writers who have his style - that would be wonderful. Other than what I mentioned above, I'd also like to say that I adore Russian writers and that my current passion is Vikings. Find me any stories about vikings and I'll love you forever. I'm also majoring in Japanese studies, so I'll read anything from Japan. Other than Genji, I am a big fan of In Praise of Shadows by Jun'ichirō Tanizaki. I also love werewolves, but nobody seems to be able to do it well. I've read Blood and Chocolate, Sharp Teeth, and my person favorite: The Talisman by Stephen King and... that other guy. Never bothered to remember his name. I have heard nothing but nice things about Algernon Blackwood, so if you have any recommendations there that would be great. One last thing, I have read Twilight (and it's sequels), Harry Potter, and Discworld - but I am only really a fan of Harry Potter, and that is greatly nostalgic.

Thank you in advance. :3

have you read Battle Royale by Koushun Takami?
obviously a Japanese writer, great read (one of my favorites), like Lord of the Flies (by William Golding) with a twist.
My most recent read has been the Dark Tower series by Stephen King (still on book seven, so no spoilers, please), and I'm in search of other books of its type.

I'm a big fan of sci-fi, horror, and fantasy (not so much high fantasy, mind you). I especially love vampires (don't recommend Twilight) and zombies.

I am currently in possession of His Dark Materials and will sooner or later pick it up. I also have I am Legend and Hell House.

Also, books with graphic and frequent erotic scenes kinda turn me off of them, so keep that in mind.

I have also read Animal Farm, Lord of the Flies, The Chrysalids, Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Under the Fang, and Twilight and New Moon (not a fan, I must say).

Thanks!

I greatly recommend The Dark Tower series, but if you are to tackle it, I also recommend that you read some of King's other novels as they tie in to the series. Salem's Lot would be a good idea.

Well, if you like historical fiction/fantasy, then I recommend the short story Hope Chest by Garth Nix, in the books Firebirds (not the second one, and a collection of short stories from different authors), and Across the Wall (a collection of short stories by Garth Nix). It's basically about other worlds, and is styled like a western, but with a fantasy element. The main character, Alice May Susan Hopkins, is found on a train platform with a steamer trunk that won't open. When she's sixteen, she can open it. There is a Hitler-dictator with the power to make people follow him... and yeah, I really can't go into more detail without spoiling it..
Hi! Okay, I'm looking for a pirate-y type book, hopefully a little romantic. I recently read To Catch a Pirate by Jade Parker, and now I'm hooked. So, something like that I guess. But none of the old, dirty adult pirate-y type books. Know what I mean? Anyways, thanks! Sorry for being kinda picky...

It seems that we have somewhat similar tastes. Perhaps you'd like The Passion by Jeanette Winterson (historical magical realism), The Orphan's Tales and Yume No Hon by Catherynne M. Valente (drenched in folklore and mythology), Midnight Never Come by Marie Brennan (a light sort of historical fairy novel), Neil Gaiman's short stories (such as the anthology Fragile Things), Kelly Link's short stories (odd fantasy), The Light Ages by Ian R. MacLeod (steampunk), or even Scar Night by Alan Campbell (an interesting enough dark fantasy, hinting at Mieville's style).
dagger: I have read Battle Royale; it was very fun, although I'd like to read it in the original Japanese before I make a final judgment. The VIZ translation wasn't that great. The movie was ******** amazing, though. Masanobu Ando was the best and totally made Kiriyama for me.

Twig: I read the first book of Dark Towers, but I never got around to the others - I've read a bit of King. The Talisman is my favorite, but I also love The Long Walk. Good stuff.

Krazy: I've heard the name, Garth Nix, but I can't say I have read anything. I will make sure to look for that; I am going to Borders in a few days, and the one around here is very well stocked.

Jonni: I reckon I've read all of Gaiman, but I haven't even heard of those others (although I have heard the name Alan Campbell) - so I'm definitely going to look further into that. The last one sounds quite good, based off the Amazon.com description, as does The Passion. I'll try to pick them up ASAP.

Thank you for the recommendations! If you have any more, feel free to post them.
