"Host" by Stephonie Myers

^Please don't read it. It's by the same person who wrote Twilight (and it's spelled 'Stephanie,' please learn to spell) and lacks....a lot. Fans of normal Sci-Fi will not enjoy this book (unless you're a teeny-bopper nut...then, I suppose, you'll like it). It's a blatant rip-off of Animorphs, plain and simple.

She's named after her father, so it's "Stephenie". No "a".

Personally, I liked it better then her other books. And she does, specifically market it as sci-fi for people who don't like sci-fi.

Also, not a rip-off of animorphs. In it, the aliens are called "souls" and they kinda look like grubs with tentacles. They attach to the base of the skull, and hook into the body, basically, so they can control it instead. Quite different from animorphs.

And the fact that the little brain-attacking aliens in Animorphs were also grublike and controlled their hosts has nothing to do with it? Oye vey. Why must this talentless hack continue making bad fanfictions?

Anyway, I was wondering if anyone knows any good books about Native American mythos and culture? I know this thread is more for fiction, but the topic is extremely broad--even if I narrow it down by tribe. Any ideas?

Skipping over the other stuff and to your Native American question -- fiction-wise, Charles deLint seems to deal with mythology in some of his work, though it overlaps with others as well. The Onion Girl is probably the best novel that I've read by him (and there's a lot of wolves/coyotes pulling from trickster myth, though it's been ages since I read it.) His short stories are pretty good. His other novels have been hit or miss for me.

The Wood Wife by Terri Windling I recall being a good read set in New Mexico. I don't, however, remember if it was based on any particular myth, but there's definitely a lot of images and the like. Both authors deal more with the reworking of fairytales and the like.

I'm a huge fan of trickster myth and that tends to help me narrow down searches when looking into Native American folklore. Sorry that I don't have any books specifically to recommend but looking up: wolf, coyote, blue jay, buffalo woman, raven, crow are good ways to find things. At least they have been for me. Good luck! smile

I think I've heard that about Charles deLint from about everyone I've asked for reccommendations from. However, I shall have to see if I can root out that book.

But thank you all the same--at this point, I'm even scrabbling for keyword for searches, so the help is greatly appreciated.

I need a new book?
I like to read about romance/fantasy/folklore/Japanese culture and ect?
Have you read anything by Holly Black? "Valiant", "Tithe", and "Ironside" are modern faerie tales with some romance twined into it, basically like a second plot line. It's a little bit darker than some others that I've read, though. Also, the Mortal Instruments trilogy by Cassandra Clare is pretty good (I know I've mentioned it before lol). It's a fantasy story, with a fair amount of romance... with a twist! (Oh ho ho!)

Continuing the romance/fantasy, I would recommend Melissa Marr--"Wicked Lovely", "Ink Exchange", and "Fragile Eternity" are all excellent. Modern faerie, only the romance is definitely predominant, with some nice political plots as well. "Green Angel" was also really good, though I couldn't tell you the authoress to save my life... sweatdrop It was sort of an apocalyptic/magic tale, though the magic bit is subtle, as is the romance. Not really sure about the Japanese folklore, sorry!

yo i've want something new to read but i just cant seem to find anything i want something magic related but modern and dark anybody got any ideas?

Holy cannoli. idea Check out Melissa Marr, Holly Black, Neil Gaiman (specifically "The Graveyard Book" wink , Melissa de la Cruz's Blue Bloods series, Garth Nix's Abhorsen series (I'm not sure if they qualify more as fantasy or, like, horror, but magic is a key element, especially necromancy). "Skulduggery Pleasant", and even "The China Garden" are good, but I forget the author names...again. "Green Angel" is dark, modern, and quietly involves magic; the His Dark Materials series is also a good one, by Philip Pullman. If you want a variety of supernatural creatures and some nice romance, check out the Night World collection--there's several long short stories in each book, of which there are currently three. Finally, I've never read it myself, but people keep mentioning the House of Night series. Vampires in the modern day (a new trend). Uh, so...That's all I've got right now.

The Luxe series by Anna Godbersen.

The Fox Woman by Kij Johnson is an excellent read concerning the kitsune myth. Just the whole reality vs. madness thing is really interesting. I think someone was looking for Japanese myth?

Looking for a new book series preferable fantasy, detective, or dystopian. Here is a short list of series or books I read and liked or loved: the Artemis Fowl series, Animorphs series, The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel series, the Silverwing saga, Fatherland, and 1984. That should give you an idea of what I like. If you suggest something be a big help if you just pm me since I am not on much and might forget I asked this here. sweatdrop
