"Host" by Stephonie Myers
^Please don't read it. It's by the same person who wrote Twilight (and it's spelled 'Stephanie,' please learn to spell) and lacks....a lot. Fans of normal Sci-Fi will not enjoy this book (unless you're a teeny-bopper nut...then, I suppose, you'll like it). It's a blatant rip-off of Animorphs, plain and simple.
She's named after her father, so it's "Stephenie". No "a".
Personally, I liked it better then her other books. And she does, specifically market it as sci-fi for people who don't like sci-fi.
Also, not a rip-off of animorphs. In it, the aliens are called "souls" and they kinda look like grubs with tentacles. They attach to the base of the skull, and hook into the body, basically, so they can control it instead. Quite different from animorphs.
And the fact that the little brain-attacking aliens in Animorphs were also grublike and controlled their hosts has nothing to do with it? Oye vey. Why must this talentless hack continue making bad fanfictions?
Anyway, I was wondering if anyone knows any good books about Native American mythos and culture? I know this thread is more for fiction, but the topic is extremely broad--even if I narrow it down by tribe. Any ideas?
Skipping over the other stuff and to your Native American question -- fiction-wise, Charles deLint seems to deal with mythology in some of his work, though it overlaps with others as well. The Onion Girl is probably the best novel that I've read by him (and there's a lot of wolves/coyotes pulling from trickster myth, though it's been ages since I read it.) His short stories are pretty good. His other novels have been hit or miss for me.
The Wood Wife by Terri Windling I recall being a good read set in New Mexico. I don't, however, remember if it was based on any particular myth, but there's definitely a lot of images and the like. Both authors deal more with the reworking of fairytales and the like.
I'm a huge fan of trickster myth and that tends to help me narrow down searches when looking into Native American folklore. Sorry that I don't have any books specifically to recommend but looking up: wolf, coyote, blue jay, buffalo woman, raven, crow are good ways to find things. At least they have been for me. Good luck!
