Saying 50SOG is a good book is like saying you watch Porn for the story.
It. Was. Horrendous.

Books like this actually ruin the institution of the written word. emotion_donotwant

they are an insult to my lifestyle.... now if it were a comedy perhaps it'd fail at that as well. My main issue is it's a twilight fanfic dolled up to something equally pathetic.... I couldn't even get past the first sexual encounter without saying " done" and putting it away.... seriously, the book is that bad
I apologize if I seem forward, but when you say "my lifestyle", do you refer to the actual BDSM lifestyle? *genuinely curious*
I ask because I'm not a Lifestyler, myself, and I'm curious to the opinions of those who are.

I do live it, and it seemed from the start of things in the book she just looked up videos on the internet and based it off that, there's more to it than what that book shows... I didn't even finish it I was so bored with it...

*nodnod* Thanks for elaborating.
I have to wonder if that's exactly what she did. I may not be in the lifestyle myself, but I think I understand the basic workings (plan on learning more), and I do know there is a lot more to it than what I understand is described in the book. I follow the Das Sporking LJ blog covering this book, and they haven't posted up Chapter Nine, part II, yet. I'm still trying not to give in to the morbid temptation to find a copy (not buy one) and skim through it myself.

I wouldn't have such a problem with this series if it had just stayed out of the news and out of Hollywood.

I downloaded the three books via a torrent site, and the only reason it is popular is because of the media... there have been "romance" books out for years, and even more explicit ones, like Scruples" but the story is too.... perfect, this guy is good looking, has a company, rich, flys a helecopter... the guy is like a frigging Ken doll spinoff of 'the perfect man'

It seems to me that it's safe to say 50 Shades just like the series it came from in that it's wish fulfillment. And like Twilight, I believe that's the only reason it gained enough speed for the media to notice. Ah, hadn't heard of that one. I stay out of the "love story novel" scene. I like my imagination better than the imaginations of many published female authors in that department.

What's disgustingly funny is that I would appreciate his character if he were only flawed and the culprit in a crime/psych thriller. That's where his archetype belongs, IMHO. I find serial killers and psychopaths fascinating, and his character is arguably a psychopathic sexual sadist. But done like this, it robs them of every iota of intrigue they might have held, because then, they're not really psychopaths.

I've enjoyed reading 50 Shades, though in the same way I would enjoy a fanfiction. Yeah, the author royally messes up her portrayal of the BDSM lifestyle, and is gonna lead a lot of people astray with that, but I think she gains a little good grace back in that it leads to consequences (no spoilers here, sorry, heh.) I think it could've been done better, but it wasn't meant to be a handbook / field guide to BDSM.

Though, admittedly, I've so far enjoyed the 50 Shames of Earl Grey better. If nothing else, reading this series is worth it for being able to read the parody (which openly makes fun of the characters and who they were based off of and whatnot.)

Probably not worth the $30.00 or so investment to buy the series and then the Parody though. Definitely a book to wait until the library has if you want to read it, or until a friend is done with it and can lend you his/her copy.

You know what I'm most disgusted with...
the fact that 50 shades of grey sold more on amazon than all the harry potter books combines. evil
