Oh, I think HP could turn into a classic. We'll see how well it holds up in the next fifty years. It's certainly a phenomenon.

Classics for me are:

Jurassic Park
Ender's Game
The Road
Life of Pi
Lord of the Rings
The Left Hand of Darkness
The Shining
The Handmaid's Tale

probably more...these books have held up well/I believe they will hold up well in time. After all, a classic is always relevant, and always enjoyable.
Phenomenon, yes, nothing like it.
But...it's aimed at the middle-school age range. Some people continue liking it after they've ended the school years, and some have simply outgrown it. For me, I had issues with it in the first place. But I did enjoy it. I'll read it again, possibly, but it's not probable, since it's not my thing anyway.
Well, to be honest, I have many issues with it. But I won't get into those unless asked for fear of a major argument...to which some of my points i can uphold, but most are just opinions and that's that.
Harry Potter and I are in a tiny bit of the same situation, which is mostly why I have issues with the books.

I loved Lord of the Rings! now that's good writing. being an amateur myself, i notice things like this--little historical for me as I recall.
I've heard of The Life of Pi from my mom. never heard of the others. I'll give them a look. Thanks.
If you really want a classic I'd go for Anna Karenina. I thought it was fairly easy to read, though it got boring and repetitive at some points. I would also recommend Of Mice and Men, East of Eden, Catcher in the Rye, Cyrano de Bergerac (that one's a play, really funny), Lord of the Flies, and All Quiet on the Western Front. Stay away from Dicken's work in my opinion. Too many words, not enough substance.

I really liked Jane Eyre.

I really liked Jane Eyre.
forgot about that too thanks..-writes down-
I haven't read many classics, but I have read:

Pride and Prejudice and Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen
Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte
Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte

I am currently reading the Phantom of the Opera by Gaston Leroux and the Old Curiosity Shop by Charles Dickens.
Macbeth is probably one of my favorite plays ever written.

As for books:
Crime and Punishment
1984
The Great Gatsby
Alice's Adventures in Wonderland
The Picture of Dorian Gray
All this talk about classics, and no one has mentioned "THE DEVINE COMEDY" by the great Dante Alighieri?
If you want to read a classic you must read this one. I bought a copy of this book at the local thrift shop awhile back for $1.99, absolutely great read.
Don Quixote
The Mill on the Floss
North and South
Vanity Fair
The Mayor of Casterbridge
The Collector
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest
God!! wow. thanks guys. I've written all of them down. so many! sweatdrop I'll try to get to a few. I warn you though, I'm a slow reader owing to some comprehension problems and a 5th grade reading level....
So many of these I've never heard of. Thank you.
