Well, here is my two cents. I'd rather have a super bland main character (Bella) than a whiny, super holier-than-thou SuperSue. Sure, Bella was annoying. Sure, Bella was a bland Mary Sue. That I will not deny.
However, when characters in both stories fail, there are a few things that can save it. Writing and description. Come on now, at least SMeyer TRIED to make her writing all nice and pretty and descriptive and s**t, while TWO people couldn't convey colloquial everyday language without sounding cheesy and trite.
Also, in Twilight, all characters were either dull and I had no interest in them, or they were mildly interesting. In HoN, however, they're all walking stereotypes. None of them are interesting in the least, and in fact, they're all quite irritating. Every time Stereotypical Black Chick or Cliche Gay Guy said or did anything, I groaned. It was extremely predictable.
I could go on. I really could. But this is just my opinion:
Twilight >>>>> House of s**t.
And I don't even LIKE Twilight.
