Girl-Crazy Marshmallow

Do you honestly believe that black people must be stupid to not pronounce things as you do? That'd be like watching Crocodile Dundee and saying the main character is pronouncing everything wrong when he's just speaking Australian English.

People speaking African American Vernacular English are not inherently simple, they just aren't whitewashing their speech.

A couple days ago while in a rotten mood I was watching Judge Judy.

Well, there were several black people on these programs & something began to really annoy me.
Judge began to get annoyed because it was hard to understand the slur the man was speaking with. (he spoke as if his lips & tongue were numb and he was unable to enunciate his words)

But what finally ended up making me want to drive screwdrivers through my ears were the women who couldn't say the word "ASK".
ALWAYS... each set of black people (except for one) kept saying "AXE" instead of ASK.
The first pair of black women... the plaintiff spoke properly.
Her sister, the defendant, could not.

Why do some black people seem to have such trouble with simple language?
And what the heck is wrong with schools if they can't teach children basic language skills?
They don't have trouble. English has MANY dialects.

That being said, instead of complaing, maybe make a list of the words you can't pronounce properly.

I would usually agree but I went to high school with plenty of people that just didn't pay attention or were to lazy to properly learn the language.. Not just blacks but every nationality.
That's their own faults, not the education system.

I never said it was the educational system's fault..
No, but I was just reitterating the fact that it wasn't

No, the educational system would have to accept some responsibility.
In MI.. we have a neighboring state whose name is often mispronounced.

Repeatedly in elementary school teachers drilled it into our heads that Illinois does not end with the S sound.

Eh. I'm a loose supporter of Ebonics. It isn't so annoying since I've come to understand it a lot more. As a mixed white mutt, I have a weird accent that I developed over time, from learning german, actually trying to correct my speech a bit, because I found my voice too 'nasal', and sought to over-enunciate, and it's also a product of lazy tongued-ness.. I stopped trying too hard. On another hand, I think I sound pretty arrogant to others if I try too hard to speak correctly, and it seems to have caused problems for me? So I don't bother correcting the accent. Ironically, I'm very determined to speak German like a native.

Finally a post with useful content.

Ebonics huh?
What is this?

Actually I say "axe" and I'm black, but it's not because i'm ignorant. i am from the caribbean so i speak English Patois, so saying certain words is hard for me even though i do speak properly. So i don't think it's right to judge someone because of the way they speak and I'm not trying to be rude.

Sugarcube, I phrased things hypothetically so you would feel comfortable clarifying if any of the unfortunate implications in your post were due to honest poor phrasing.

ETA: I just saw your reply to someone else, "ebonics" and "African American Vernacular English" both refer to the way some members of the black community speak differently than what is considered standard English. I'd give it a google, since that's an overly simple explanation, but if you're not familiar with it it would explain the crossed channels of communication, since I assumed from your first post that you'd noticed that AAVE exists. (30 lashes with a wet noodle for assuming) smile

Coming from a teacher's POV...the system can only do so much, if a child doesn't want to learn, they're not going to. Period. It's not the system's fault that child is lazy, or whatever the reason for him/her not wanting to learn is.

Pronucing Illinois with the S sound at the end isn't wrong, it's just different.

Ya, this is what I was wondering... if there was a REASON for it other than the "under-educated" reason some may assume.

... please don't think I'm judging anyone... I was just curious about this type of slang or style of speech. Kinda wondering if it was a choice or something else.
