he night air washes over you just as the seemingly black ocean washes over the dark sand. Above you is a shadowed sky with clouds blocking most of the stars. Despite this, the moon's glow still creeps out giving some light to guide you. The sand is cool underneath your feet as you walk down the empty beach and the only noise comes from the waves crashing down nearby.
Maybe it was not such a good idea to take a walk.
The chill wraps around you like a second skin and you cross your arms in an attempt to generate warmth. Behind you, in the distance, a light burns bright. Its glow reminds you of a lighthouse glowing bright in the night to help lead sailors home.
You should head back.
You can already envision your friends laughing and talking. The bon fire lighting up their faces and chasing away the shadows. Food and drink being passed around as everyone relaxed as they enjoyed the summer night.
You should have taken a friend with you on this walk.
The glow of the moon was bright, but shadows still crept around you. The hair on your neck and arm rises as a feeling of unease washes over you. The once comforting sound of the ocean unsettles you as a stray thought crosses your mind. How many people have died out in that black watery abyss? You are not even sure where the thought originated, but you quickly begin to walk back towards the direction of your friends.
You feel like you are being watched.
Continuing to walk, you chide yourself on being paranoid. The feeling does not pass and your heart begins to pound.
Just one look behind you.
You turn around and your body freezes on its own accord out of surprise. You had not expected someone to actually be there. Letting the cold ocean race over her bare feet, a girl stares at you.
The glow of the moon twists shadows along her body, but her pale blue eyes seem to shine as they gaze into your own. The chill begins to seep down into your bones as you stand paralyzed and silent as if someone had stolen your voice. A small smile creeps on her lips as she begins to walk towards you and it is now that you realize that her form seems to fade out every few seconds. She stops a few yards away from you and tilts her head as she looks down at the ground behind you. The paralysis breaks on you and you follow her gaze.
The beach had been empty. Where did this girl even come from?
Behind you, resting in the sand, is a small present wrapped with ribbon. You turn back to the girl, but there is only empty air. Heart pounding in your chest, you walk forward looking for the girl and pause when you notice that the only footsteps on the sand were your own. The black ocean draws your gaze once more even though you doubt that the girl had gone for a swim. A heavy fog drifts above the watery depths surprising you. It had not been there before. You squint your eyes as the fog seems to shift and you tilt your head leaning closer as a blurry figure forms in the mist. The figure is familiar, but surely it cannot be...The Phantom smiles at you once more before disappearing into the fog once more.
This has to be a dream...or a hallucination caused by the night.
You stumble away from the water, kicking up sand as you back up suddenly. Your foot hits something and you fall to the ground. Underneath your legs is the present from before. Numbly, you reach out and take it into your hands. A note is attached to it:
Be mindful of the ocean; it steals away the unwary.
There is no way this is real...that girl...was she a...?
The present weighs heavy in your hand as your thoughts whirl in your mind. Its mere presence proves that this had not been a dream...
