Yeah, the Smoke ability is just a novelty attack. If you've ever played Pokemon, it's kinda like Magikarp (the pretty much useless orange fish with the mustache). Magikarp has an attack called "Splash" where he basically flops around on the ground and it does NOTHING. It's just for fun, and really serves no true purpose.
